ROBIN VAN PERSIE is set to miss Sunday’s clash with Manchester United.

Arsenal’s Dutch strike ace faces a week on the sidelines after suffering a knock in training.

But his absence means Togo hitman Emmanuel Adebayor, who bagged the winner at United in September, is being lined up to start at The Emirates.

Boss Arsene Wenger is hoping Van Persie — who has bagged five goals in six games — will be back for the Carling Cup clash with North London rivals Spurs next Wednesday.

But United will not be pleased to see Adebayor in the starting line-up after he caused them plenty of problems at Old Trafford.

United star Rio Ferdinand said: “I thought Adebayor played really well for them. I’d say he is the toughest player I’ve faced this season.”

Injured Van Persie has ‘good chance’ of facing Man Utd

Robin van Persie has a “good chance” of facing Manchester United on Sunday despite picking up an injury in training.

The 23-year-old Dutch striker hurt his ankle this week and Arsène Wenger will wait for the results of a scan before deciding over his participation at Emirates Stadium on Sunday. But when he spoke exclusively to Arsenal TV Online on Thursday afternoon the manager seemed optimistic.

“At the moment we think it is a very short-term problem,” said Wenger. “He is going for a scan and after that we will know more about it. He still has a very good chance of being available for Sunday.”

Elsewhere there was mixed news. “Eboue will be available,” said Wenger. “But Ljungberg and Gallas are still out.”

The return of the Ivorian right back will be welcome. He has featured in just 66 minutes of first-team action over the course of the last seven games.

Gilberto is suspended on Sunday after his red card at Blackburn last weekend. However Wenger was positive when asked how he would replace the in-form Brazilian.

“With a good player who will give everything against Manchester United,” he replied. “We have players like Flamini who can come in.  He did well at Liverpool recently.”

Portsmouth complete Lauren deal

Portsmouth have signed Arsenal defender Lauren on a two-and-a-half year deal.
The Cameroon player, who turns 30 on Friday, has joined for an undisclosed fee following six-and-a-half years at the Gunners.

"Lauren is an outstanding player. He is a great athlete and professional, very strong and quick, too," Pompey boss Harry Redknapp told the club website.

"I'm delighted he's decided to join us over a whole host of clubs that were after him."
