Milan general director Ariedo Braida has confirmed that the Italian giants are weighing up whether to make a cut-price approach for Frank Lampard in the summer.

Fifa regulations state that any player who has served three years of a contract signed when under the age of 28 can buy themselves out of their existing deal, at 15 days notice at the end of the season.

Any buy-out fee is based on wages rather than market value, which has alerted Milan, and most probably a host of other clubs across Europe, to the fact Lampard could be available for around £8million.

When informed of these Fifa directives, Braida was willing to concede that Lampard could now become a genuine target in the close season.

"Is this true? Lampard available for £8million?" Braida told the Sunday Mail.

"If this is the case, of course it is interesting news.

"Lampard is a very good player, one of the best around, and this is something

"I wasn't aware of it at all. I am glad I have been made aware of this situation."

Chelsea are eager to tie Lampard to a long-term contract but as yet talks have proved unproductive.

Lampard's agent Steve Kutner has confirmed that he met Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon before Christmas, in an attempt to strike an accord over his client's future but again, these discussions were less than fruitful.

"I had a talk with Peter before Christmas and there is no news," Kutner told the News of the World.

"At the moment we're far apart. The ball is in Chelsea's court.

"At the moment Frank is just concentrating on trying to win trophies for Chelsea - but if he wants to leave at the end of the season, he can do it.

"There's a Fifa rule that allows him to unilaterally dissolve his contract."

Braida was interested in the news and raised the possibility of a summer bid for the England midfielder.

The Stamford Bridge club last week suggested that they were close to signing a new deal with Lampard but nothing concrete has emerged from talks between club and player.

Braida, meanwhile, confirmed that a host of European clubs would join the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal in opposing new UEFA president Michel Platini's plans to limit each country's Champions League quota to three.

He told the News of the World: 'None of the Spanish, Italian, English or German clubs want this and we [AC Milan] don't want it either.

'Platini is a good man and a real football man. We congratulate him on his appointment.

'But he must know there isn't another competition like the Champions League in the world and we don't see the need to change it.'
