Former dustman Savidan set for record sweep

VALENCIENNES, France, March 23 (Reuters) - Steve Savidan, who is on the brink of achieving a unique hat-trick of top-scoring accolades, was a dustman before breaking into the limelight in Ligue 1 with struggling Valenciennes.

The 28-year-old Savidan looks set to become the first player to be top scorer in the third division, Ligue 2 and Ligue 1 in three successive years, something that has never been done in French soccer history.

The Valenciennes striker leads the standings in the top flight with 13 goals from 29 games, including four in a 5-2 defeat of Nantes last month.

"I was not really brilliant before joining Valenciennes," Savidan told Reuters in an interview.

"I started in Angers in a district club before playing for the city's first team in 1997."

Savidan had to take a part-time job and every morning, before going to training, he used to collect garbage.

"These years were not easy, indeed. I did not have the life I have today but I think I was not ready to make the efforts to become a good professional player," he said.

RIGHT TIME

Savidan then had spells at Chateauroux, AC Ajaccio, Beauvais and Angouleme before moving to Valenciennes.

"I understood what I had to do to improve when I arrived at Valenciennes. It was the right time and I also had the chance to meet the right man: Daniel Leclercq."

Iron-man Leclercq, who helped RC Lens to win their first and only French champions' title in 1998, was then the Valenciennes coach and forced the player to face up to his responsibilities.

"This club suits me perfectly. No one is lying, the atmosphere is serene and everybody trusts everybody," Savidan said.

Savidan, who had been used to going out night-clubbing, started to work hard and was quickly rewarded for his efforts.

In his first season at the club, he finished top scorer in the third division with 19 goals as Valenciennes were promoted to Ligue 2.

TOP FLIGHT

The following season, he netted 16 times to top the scorers' standings with Valenciennes returning to the top flight.

With 13 goals so far this season, Savidan has scored 48 goals from 98 league matches with the club.

"I think other people are happier for me than I am," he said.

"Of course, I take a look at the standings and see how others are doing. But if I score and we lose the game, my personal performance is of no interest to me."

Father-of-one Savidan has now opened a restaurant in Valenciennes and seems attached to the city.

"The restaurant is called the K9. K is for Karine, my wife, and 9 is for my shirt number," he said.

Savidan said he would probably stay with the club next season despite interest from a number of other clubs.

"I am still under contract and it is the only important thing. I know where I come from, I know where I am. I don't care about the rest."
