Macquarie University psychologists take centre stage at Sydney Writers Festival
May 24, 2007
Professor Max Coltheart and Associate Professor Amanda Barnier are sure to have a captive audience when they talk at a special Sydney Writers Festival event on June 2, particularly because Barnier is an expert in hypnosis!
These two very eminent psychologists from the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science will accompany author/neuropsychologist Dr Paul Broks from the University of Plymouth at the Café Scientific: Is your brain who you are? talk.
The free event, hosted by Bernie Hobbs (New Inventors) and Dr Paul Willis (Catalyst) of ABC Science and supported by New Scientist Magazine, will take place at 1.30pm on Saturday June 2, at the Bangarra Theatre, Pier 4/5, Hickson Rd, Walsh Bay. Because no bookings are taken, patrons are advised to arrive early.
The three expert panellists will debate what it is that gives us a sense of inner self, and what happens when we lose it. We all feel we know who we are - that here, inside my head, is 'me' - yet some scientists argue that no such thing exists and that the 'self' is just a story made up by our brains to help us make sense of ourselves and fellow humans. |
