| Maicon & Cordoba bans cut | Wednesday 28 March, 2007 | | UEFA have reduced the bans imposed on Inter’s Douglas Maicon and Ivan Cordoba for their part in the March 6 Champions League brawl at Valencia.
The Brazilian has had his six-match European ban slashed to three games, while the Colombian has seen his three-match suspension cut to two.
The duo were caught up in the mass fracas at the end of the Mestalla clash after Valencia man David Navarro broke Nicolas Burdisso’s nose with a punch.
Inter lodged an appeal, which was examined today, and the Disciplinary Commission opted for a partial reduction in penalties.
However, UEFA failed to overturn the seemingly harsh six-match ban imposed on ‘victim’ Burdisso.
Instead, he’s been served with the threat of an additional two-match ban if he re-offends in the next two years.
Striker Julio Cruz also left Nyon, Switzerland, today in an unhappy frame of mind after his two-match stop was left untouched.
On the Valencia side of things, Carlos Marchena has had his four-match penalty halved to two – with those taken away being suspended on the condition of good behaviour.
While Navarro has now been suspended from all footballing activity for six months rather than the seven he was handed first. That could be increased to eight. |
