Mexes: I was almost a Red
Philippe Mexes claims he could have been lining up against his Roma team-mates at the Stadio Olimpico had he signed for United when given the chance.
The occasional French international, who turned 25 last week, says he twice turned down a move to Manchester in order to pursue a career in Italy.
"[The first time was] when I was 16 or 17 and then later when I was leaving Auxerre in 2004. [Former Auxerre manager] Guy Roux actually wanted me to choose Manchester United over Roma.
"But the jump from Auxerre to United would have been too great. Roma are also a major club, but when I first signed for them the team was in transition and there was a better chance of me playing and developing."
Although Mexes eventually snubbed a move to England, he has fond memories of his visit to Old Trafford during the transfer negotiations.
"I still have the Manchester shirt they gave me with my name on the back," he said.
"The memories of touring the club and the stadium will always live with me. But I do not regret a thing. I am happy at Roma and playing in Italy has helped me grow as a defender. I don't think I would be the same player if I'd moved to England." |
