Saha set for long spell on the sidelines

Manchester United striker Louis Saha is likely to be out of action until 'around November or December', according to his agent.

Ranko Stojic revealed the France forward has undergone a knee operation in America in a bid to repair an injury which contributed to his disappointing season last term.

Stojic told the Manchester Evening News: 'Louis has had surgery in America and he won't be on the field now for a few months.

'I don't know when he will be able to start training again but he is looking at being back around November or December. But it is going to be a while.'

United have already been tipped to bring in reinforcements up front ahead of next year's Premier League title defence and Saha's long-term absence will hasten their search.

'There is no question that he will be changing clubs. He's been unlucky and it is very important now that he gets back to 100%.'

Saha back for new season

Louis Saha 'fully expects' to be fit for the start of next season, contrary to earlier claims he would be out until November.

The Manchester United striker has undergone a knee operation in the United States and Ranko Stojic had revealed Saha would be sidelined until the autumn.

However, Stojic is no longer the France international's agent and his current representatives - Stellar Group - have issued a statement on the forward's fitness.

"Louis Saha is exclusively contracted to the Stellar Group who advise the player in all football and career-related matters," read a statement from Stellar Group.

"Louis Saha has absolutely no ties with Ranko Stojic, who has no authority whatsoever to speak on behalf of the player or his management group.

"Louis has successfully undergone knee surgery in America and is now undergoing rehabilitation in the South of France.

"He hopes and fully expects to be fit for the start of the new season and any claims to the contrary are completely false."

Smith admits he may quit Man Utd

Manchester United striker Alan Smith admits he may leave Old Trafford if he fails to get assurances about his future from boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

Smith, 26, has failed to command a regular first-team place since recovering from a broken leg.

He told The Sun: "If the manager tells me he wants me, I'm there for him. If he doesn't, it's time to move on.

"If you're no longer wanted, then you have to consider your options. I want to be out there from the start."

He revealed his future now lay in Ferguson's hands, saying: "If they are going to sell me, I'd like to know. But I won't find out unless I get to speak to the manager."

Smith, signed from Leeds United for £7m three years ago, has two years left on his current deal, but it is understood he has not been offered a new contract by United.

He battled back from serious injury to play last season and also win an England recall, and now wants regular action.

Middlesbrough, Spurs, Aston Villa and Rangers have all been linked with Smith, but Everton's interest has cooled.

Manchester United have confirmed they expect Louis Saha to be fit for the start of the new season.

There were fears the France striker would be out until November after undergoing knee surgery in America earlier this month.

But the Barclays Premier League champions insist the 28-year-old is recovering well and is continuing his rehabilitation.

The club said in a statement: 'Louis underwent surgery in the USA earlier this month to treat a knee problem that developed at the end of last season.

'Louis is currently continuing his rehabilitation in France under guidance from the specialist and the club's medical team.

'He is making good progress and is expected to be fit for full training by the start of the new season.'

Saha struggled with hamstring and knee problems in the second half of last season, limiting him to just four starts in 2007.

United 'bid for Serie A star'

Fabio Quagliarella's agent has claimed that the Sampdoria striker could join Manchester United before the start of the new season.

Silvio Pagliari maintains Sir Alex Ferguson made a £10million bid for his client recently and, if the offer still stands, then the Italian international could be on his way to Old Trafford.

Quagliarella has become one of the most in-demand strikers in Serie A since his move to Samp last summer, and the 23-year-old announced his potential to a wider audience with two stunning goals in Italy's recent Euro 2008 qualifier against Lithuania.

After scoring 13 goals in 35 league appearances for Samp last season, his agent has now opened the door to a possible move to England.

"One month ago, Manchester United made a £10million offer," said Pagliari

"We believe Fabio is worth between €15 to €20million (£10 to £13million), hence if the English club's offer still stands, he could probably go abroad."

United chief executive David Gill has previously hinted that the English champions are seeking to purchase a new striker after already reinforcing their squad with the additions of Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Anderson
