Peruzzi picks Argentine heir
Lazio have let Angelo Peruzzi choose his heir and after viewing tapes of many candidates has picked Argentine Juan Pablo Carrizo.
The veteran goalkeeper has announced he will hang up his gloves at the end of the season and several players have been linked with the vacant place at the Stadio Olimpico.
The ‘Corriere dello Sport’ claims that Peruzzi was asked to help pick his successor as – along with second choice Marco Ballotta – he viewed a series of DVDs showing the candidates.
While Marco Amelia of Livorno and Udinese’s Morgan De Sanctis are well known to them, others saw their footage analysed in depth.
These included Celtic shot-stopper Artur Boruc, PSV Eindhoven’s Brazilian Heurelio Gomes, Stefano Sorrentino of AEK Athens and Independiente Avellaneda man Oscar Ustari.
However, it’s reported that the clear winner was a young Argentine who has just broken into the international team.
Juan Pablo Carrizo has impressed during his time at River Plate despite turning 23 years of age only last week.
Peruzzi and Ballotta believe he is ready for a move to Serie A and advised Lazio to prepare a bid.
