Guidolin: I was surprised too!
Tuesday 15 May, 2007
Francesco Guidolin admits even he did not expect to be back on the Palermo bench, “but nor did I think I’d be sacked five rounds from the end.”
Life is certainly full of surprises at the Stadio Barbera for their Coach, who was booted out and then recalled three weeks later after the arrival of Renzo Gobbo failed to turn their fortunes around.
“I did not expect to be recalled to lead Palermo, just as I never thought I would be fired five rounds from the end,” said the tactician in today’s Press conference.
There was general amazement around the country after President Maurizio Zamparini bitterly criticised Guidolin in the media only to bring him back again.
“President Zamparini called me and said he regretted his decision. He asked me to return to lead the side and I accepted without the slightest doubt.”
Having been dubbed “too sad to be the Palermo boss,” Guidolin joked about his brief time in the wilderness.
“It’s as if I have been out with the flu for three weeks. I take back my position without any point to prove or desire for revenge, but only to conclude the work I put in to this adventure.”
The Rosanero had been fighting for the leadership until Christmas and were in the top four for most of the season, but now risk missing out on UEFA Cup football as well.
“Certainly our situation in the standings is more complicated now than it was 20 days ago, so we must try to band together and drag out every last drop of energy we have left to reach our objective.
“We have to try with all our pride and strength, even if we know it will not be at all a simple task. But a team that notches up 50 points is a team with a capital ‘T’ and I want to be at the helm.”
President Zamparini also wrote an open letter to the fans in which he rejected the appeal to halve the players’ wages following their woeful 3-2 defeat at already relegated Ascoli. However, he did go back on another pledge – to sell the club as soon as possible.
“I urge you to dream and believe together with us. If you are strong, you can rediscover your unity especially after a defeat,” said the patron.
“We keep our strength if we maintain our grip on a dream that will only come true if we are optimistic. I am an optimist and I believe. So join me in believing. I will not leave you, I will not leave Palermo Calcio until the end of my project – and thankfully there’s a long way to go yet.” |
