Arrigo Sacchi is eating humble pie and has sought to apologise to Fabio Capello after branding him as "not the ideal coach for Real Madrid" earlier this season.

In an open letter to Capello yesterday, Sacchi wrote in the Gazzetta dello Sport: "Fabio is a man of great character, personality and understanding. He has used on the field his great experience and knowledge. I have always said that I respect him. I am not in love with his football but, knowing the difficulties and problems that I have found in Madrid, my esteem goes to Capello."


"Real Madrid came from three seasons without success, with a squad formed more thanks to the fame than to the quality and tactical necessities. Some players had acquired vices, others had lost motivation and professionalism and others were in decline."

"Capello had the luck to find a president who, by will or impossibility, backed him at the most delicate moment. He has had another favorable situation: the slow slide of Barca. Fabio has deserved to be leader for his ability to transform squads into teams. Now Madrid is the favorite in the final sprint. Capello will confirm himself as a great winner.
