New Juve boss 'a mini-Mourinho'
Wednesday 30 May, 2007
Giancarlo Corradini will sit on the Juventus bench for the final games of the season after Didier Deschamps’ resignation. “I feel like a little Jose Mourinho.”

The 46-year-old has spent this term as assistant manager to Deschamps (pictured) and took charge of his first Bianconeri training session this afternoon.

“I feel like a little Mourinho,” he told ‘Juventus Channel,’ referring to the Chelsea boss’ start as assistant manager at Barcelona.

“He also learned by working beside winning Coaches. I hope all of this will help when I start my career proper.”

Corradini will take charge of Juve for the last two Serie B matches against Bari and Spezia, as promotion and the title is already secure despite their nine-point Calciopoli penalty.

“The first step in my work will be on Sunday. It has been a difficult season and we had a lot of problems, especially at the midway point.

“But we held on and came out of it in great shape, above all thanks to the strength of this squad and everyone’s willingness to help out.”

With the results essentially meaningless and several stars away on international duty, Corradini may be tempted to make changes.

“I will continue the work we have done here throughout the year. My responsibilities may grow, but the squad is united,” he added.

“I want to salute Didier, who I spent a wonderful season with. Thanks to him and all the staff we have achieved a great objective despite the obstacles in our path.”

There was also an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors today in Turin to discuss the options for the future following Deschamps’ departure. Director Marco Tardelli denied he was set to step down from his position.

As for DD, he will not be taking over at Lyon. The rumoured switch fell through, as today the French club announced that Alain Perrin had replaced Gerard Houllier.

The Bianconeri are already working to strengthen the side for the new coach who will be announced in the coming weeks.

Juventus have made the first important signing of the season according to French daily newspaper 'Le Parisien' as it reported that the Turin based club have already reached an agreement with Bordeaux midfielder Rio Mavuba.

Another French newspaper, 'L`Equipe', has reported two other possible important arrivals for the Bianconeri, with one of them being Diarra, a long-term target for the Juve management.

However, more importantly, the Spanish newspaper 'Sport' reported the unexpected sale of David Trezeguet for 15 million Euros to Lyon, Valencia or Barcelona as all three teams are interested in signing the prolific striker who was initially intentioned on staying on with Juventus next season.

If that was the case, then Alberto Gilardino could be on his way to Turin and join his favourite team of his youth.

Juventus put City target Ranieri on wanted list

Kevin McCarra
Saturday June 2, 2007
The Guardian

Claudio Ranieri is increasingly concerned by delays to his appointment as Manchester City manager and may yet join Juventus instead. England's friendly against Brazil brought him to London yesterday but he also planned talks with City and with representatives of the former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is seeking to buy the club. The proposed takeover is in the hands of lawyers and may not go ahead until later this month.

Article continues
Ranieri will probably steer clear of the job until the club's future ownership is known because he wishes to be certain of the situation in which he would be working. The Italian must be aware that a plan by Shinawatra to acquire a 30% stake in Liverpool three years ago came to nothing. City will have to devise some means of reassuring him soon because it appears he will have other options.

Juventus are tempted to recruit him after the departure of Didier Deschamps, who resigned after leading the team back to Serie A. The Frenchman had become frustrated by his lack of power and was at loggerheads with the director of football, Alessio Secco, a former press officer at the club.

It had been assumed that Marcello Lippi would go back to Juventus but he prefers to stay out of the limelight for a little longer. Prior to his 2006 World Cup triumph with Italy there had been calls for him to stand down, partly because of the bad publicity his son was attracting. Davide Lippi, a key figure at the GEA player agency, goes on trial this month over accusations of "unfair competition through the use of threats and violence."

Considering the protracted nature of legal proceedings in Italy, Juventus, who are preparing a £10m bid for Mohamed Sissoko, cannot be sure how long the case might run and Lippi will apparently not return to work for them until it is over. Meanwhile, Ranieri's stock has soared after he saved Parma from relegation before resigning this week.

The Juventus president, Giovanni Cobolli Gigli, now views him as a strong candidate to succeed Deschamps, but no firm offer has yet been made. Ranieri, after his time with Chelsea, does feel drawn to the Premiership and he would be attracted too by the £50m transfer fund available at City if Shinawatra can buy out the chairman, John Wardle, his business partner David Makin and other shareholders.

Empoli have confirmed they will sell the Argentine midfielder this summer after his exploits helped take the club to an historic first UEFA Cup qualification.

“Almiron is on the wish list of many clubs,” noted his agent Claudio Vagheggi on ‘Stadionews24.’

“At the moment Juve and Inter are on his trail, but also Palermo. I spoke with director Rino Foschi recently and we will probably meet up in the next few weeks.”

It is a warning for the bigger clubs, as the Rosanero intend to strengthen their squad after coming so close to a Champions League spot this term only to settle for the UEFA Cup.

The 26-year-old Argentine moved from Newell’s Old Boys to Udinese in 2001-02 with a brief spell at Verona before joining Empoli in 2004.

Buffon backs Ranieri's Juve Saturday 2 June, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Juventus are determined to have Claudio Ranieri on the bench next season and Gianluigi Buffon agrees he’s ready to remain if that’s the case.

The goalkeeper had warned he was looking to leave if Didier Deschamps was not replaced by Marcello Lippi, but following the World Cup winning tactician’s refusal to come out of retirement, other avenues are opening up.

All of Italy’s newspapers report this morning that a meeting with option Gianluca Vialli did not go well, but that contact with Ranieri reached a basic agreement.

The only problem currently is the length of his contract and the issue of staff. It’s claimed Ranieri has requested a two-year deal and that Juve would prefer to keep the fitness coaches from this season.

The former Chelsea boss is free from his ties to Parma, having rescued them from relegation, and it seems as if Juventus will leap in before Manchester City can secure his signature.

To further boost Ranieri’s credentials, Buffon has come out in favour of this new era in the Bianconeri’s history.

“Ranieri has the right charisma and would be excellent,” said the goalkeeper. “He is a great Coach and so can lead a team like Juve.

“He achieved a miracle with Parma, because they had even less chance of safety than Messina when he took over. Ranieri has an excellent CV.”

As a final open door to Juventus, Buffon also pointed out that he was not demanding Lippi’s return to the bench.

“I had never said it was either Lippi or nobody. I am not a director and do not sponsor anyone.”

Meanwhile, the Azzurri shot-stopper also looked ahead to tonight’s Euro 2008 qualifier in the Faroe Islands.

“I have the utmost respect for people like them who do not play professionally and obviously they’ll do everything to impress, but we cannot afford to do them any favours.

“I hope to feel very cold, as that means we have dominated upfront and I won’t have a save to make! We are all very experienced here and have learned our lesson from a few humiliations in the past, so there’s no risk of underestimating our opponents.”
