Villarreal Loom As Makelele On Verge Of Chelsea Exit
Having lost his first team spot at Chelsea, Claude Makelele is considering an exit, and the possibility of joining compatriot Robert Pires at Villarreal.
Makelele had been one of the first names on Mourinho's Chelsea team-sheet for two-and-a-half years, but has lost his protagonism over the last few months.
A decline in athleticism with age and the explosion of John Obi Mikel onto the scene have conspired to keep in on the bench more than he would have liked.
With Obi Mikel, Essien, Lampard and Ballack looking like Mourinho's chosen midfield four for next season, the Frenchman is not very keen on a substitute role.
At 34, he is looking at a move to a club where he can play regularly, and Villarreal seem to be the chosen ones. After a season dogged by injuries, the Yellow Submarines have finally put it together, and are now within a whisker of a Uefa Cup berth.
With Alessio Tacchinardi's future in doubt, Villarreal have approached the Frenchman, and Robert Pires is reportedly being used to help smoothen the operation.
"If he were to come, it would be spectacular, because he is a very intelligent player, and has a lot of experience," Pires had said.
"Although his age is being spoken about, what he has been doing with Chelsea shows that he can be a very important player."
Villarreal are currently on an aggressive signing spree, having already secured Ayala, Capdevila and Diego Lopez for next season.
