Antoine Siberski today spoke of his sadness at the fact that his Newcastle United career appears to be over after just one season.
As revealed in later editions of the Chronicle yesterday, the French striker has turned down the offer of a one-year deal from Newcastle United.
And he is now set to have talks with new Wigan Athletic boss Chris Hutchings.
The French striker was hoping to hold out for a two-year deal which would see him finish his playing career at St James' Park.
New Toon boss Sam Allardyce was happy to honour the one-year deal that Glenn Roeder offered to Sibierski before his departure.

But the former Manchester City man chose to reject the deal after deciding he had to put his family first.
Insisting that his decision had nothing to do with the money on offer, Sibierski told the Chronicle: "I would have loved to have stayed at Newcastle.
"I loved my time here at the club and the fans.
"I had a great rapport with the supporters and I am sad that it looks like I am leaving."
Sibierski left Man City under a cloud last August after being frozen out by then boss Stuart Pearce.
However, he took his chance at St James' Park with both hands after firing in eight goals in 25 appearances.
Sibierski never made any secret of the fact he loved life at a big club.
But the striker did not want to move his children from their current school in Manchester for just one year, meaning a two-year contract was essential for him to commit the rest of his career to Newcastle.
Sibierski, though, will be 33 in August and 35 by the end of a two-year contract, meaning United would have found it hard to justify a longer deal, especially with young gun Andy Carroll just having put pen to paper on a four-deal and progressing rapidly through the ranks.
Yet there were no hard feelings from the former Lens forward.
He added: "I wish Big Sam all of the best for the future as well as Newcastle and their fans."
Meanwhile, Sibierski's agent Willie McKay today admitted the contract snub was not a money issue.
He says: "Antoine does not want more money, he simply wants to sign a two-year deal, and doesn't feel it is worth uprooting his children from their current school for just one.
"He did leave Man City in disappointing circumstances.
"But he is still highly regarded as a top, top player and has been during his career.
"He is the sort of player who plays off the front players and holds the ball up, but at Man City he was getting played out on the left wing.
"Yes, he can play as a striker, which he doesn't mind, but he is a midfielder by trade.
"Antoine is very disappointed to leave Newcastle. But it isn't too late for him to sign a two-year deal." |
