It has once again come down to a case of insufficient funds for Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez.
With Samuel Eto'o unlikely to go for less than 50 million euros if at all Barcelona decide to invite bids, and almost similar figures being quoted for Carlos Tevez, Rafa has been forced to set modest targets.
The Times insist that the former Valencia coach has dropped interest in both Eto'o and Tevez, more so because those sagas look set to run through the summer, and go for Villarreal's Diego Forlan.
The Uruguayan is unlikely to come cheap either, but a 23 million euro release clause is still a lot more reachable for Liverpool.
Forlan is also interesting Barcelona, who wanted him last summer as well, but failed to land him. Sunderland have supposedly given up after being priced out.
The former Manchester United man was a failure in the Premiership, and left Old Trafford via the back door.
His agent, Daniel Bolotnicoff, told The Times: "There has not been any offer from Liverpool and it's very difficult to talk about what might happen when there isn't an offer there, but things can change every day.
"If he received a very good offer then he will think about it, but it will also depend on whether Villarreal are happy."
Benitez is thought to be revising his list of forward targets. He has apparently concluded that he does not have the funds to compete for players such as Samuel Eto'o and Carlos Tevez.
How a player who struggled to make the grade at Manchester United would be received by Liverpool supporters is open to debate, but Forlan is believed to figure prominently in Benitez's thoughts.
"There has not been any offer from Liverpool and it's very difficult to talk about what might happen when there isn't an offer there, but things can change every day," Daniel Bolotnicoff, Forlan's agent, told The Times last night. "If he received a very good offer then he will think about it, but it will also depend on whether Villarreal are happy."
