Livorno take on Tristan
After Francesco Tavano, Livorno have chosen Diego Tristan to fill the gap left by Cristiano Lucarelli.
“I can’t wait to get back on form and start afresh,” he is quoted as saying in the Italian media.
The club realises that the £6m sale of their talismanic captain to Shakhtar Donetsk will leave a massive hole in their squad, but President Aldo Spinelli is working to reassure the fans with a number of new signings.
It is reported this morning that 31-year-old Spanish centre-forward Tristan has reached an agreement for a one-year contract with Livorno.
The player is believed to have rejected offers from Liga sides to try his hand in Serie A for a deal worth £470,000 per season.
It is a gamble for the player who was a hero at Deportivo La Coruna for many years, but disappointed in his return to Mallorca last term.
He didn’t score a single goal in 13 appearances and was released in January 2006, but has been working on his fitness levels.
Meanwhile, Tavano has been handed the Number 10 jersey that had been retired with Igor Protti in 2005.
It was a request from Protti himself that allowed the shirt to be put back into the squad. “I don’t want to rob children of the dream of one day wearing this number for Livorno.”
