Babel Ignored Van Basten's Advice To Join Liverpool
Ryan Babel has revealed that Dutch legend Marco van Basten tried to
persuade him to stay in the Netherlands.
The current Holland manager told his country's successful Under-21 squad
that to enhance their chances of making th senior squad for Euro 2008
they should remain in the Eredivisie.
But 20-year-old Babel ignored the advice and secured an ?11.5 million
transfer to Anfield and the English Premiership.
"Van Basten spoke to the squad before the Under-21 Championships and
said it would be best for players to stay in Holland if they wanted to
go to Euro 2008," said Babel.
"But, if I'm honest, his words did not even enter my mind when Liverpool
said they wanted to sign me.
"I spoke to Rafa Benitez and I have enough confidence in my own ability
to believe I will play enough games for Liverpool to convince van Basten
and go to the finals."
