Gabriel Heinze will join Spanish side Real Madrid on a four-year deal, the Spanish club have confirmed.

The29-year-old, who on Tuesday was told by a Premier League arbitrationpanel that he could not join Liverpool as he had wished, will sign foran undisclosed fee.

The La Liga champions announced the news ontheir official website. A statement said: "Real Madrid and ManchesterUnited have reached an agreement for the transfer of Gabriel Heinze.

"TheArgentinian will sign a contract for the next four seasons and will beimmediately incorporated into Bernd Schuster's squad."

The movedraws the curtain on three years at Old Trafford for the all-actionleft-back, who United signed for £6.9million from Paris Saint Germainin June 2004.

Heinze made 83 appearances for the Reds scoringfour goals, including a fabulous first season that saw him collect theSir Matt Busby Player of the Year award. However, injuries hampered hissecond season with the Reds and last season he was under pressure forthe left-back slot from Patrice Evra, now Sir Alex Ferguson's firstchoice.

HEINZE AGENTS HAD PALACE PLAN

Gabriel Heinze's representatives tried to bypass Manchester United's block on the player moving to Liverpool by engineering a move to Crystal Palace first.

Under the proposal made to Palace, the Argentina defender would have first been bought by the south London club and then sold on to Liverpool.

The bid was revealed in evidence given to a Premier League panel earlier this week by Palace chief executive Phil Alexander.

It is understood Alexander confirmed to the panel that a proposed scheme had been put forward by Heinze's representatives to secure the eventual transfer of the defender to Liverpool by initially transferring him to Palace.

The panel went on to reject Heinze's bid to force United to sell him to Liverpool.

The 29-year-old claimed United had written a letter allowing him to leave if another club offered a fee of £6.8million.

The panel dismissed Heinze's case and backed United, who maintained they made it clear to the 29-year-old both verbally and in writing that he would not be permitted to join one of their title rivals.

After news of the Palace plan emerged, Real Madrid revealed they had agreed a deal with United to sign Heinze.
