Brazil scramble draw in Colombia
(Reuters) Monday 15 October 2007

Colombia and Brazil kicked off their 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifying campaigns with a 0-0 draw in Bogota on Sunday.

The only team to have played at all 18 editions of the FIFA World Cup, Brazil are likely to be happier with the point given that they failed to play the free-flowing football for which they have become renowned.

Despite making wholesale changes from their Copa America Venezuela 2007 squad and fielding an inexperienced team, Colombia had most of the pressure and Brazil became less adventurous as the game went on

The match kicked off 45 minutes late after a torrential downpour left puddles on the pitch but the water drained away quickly.

Backed by a passionate crowd at the El Campin stadium, Colombia took the game to Brazil and Radamel Falcao went close after a well-worked move from a free-kick in the third minute.

Colombia striker Wason Renteria twice forced Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar to make difficult saves from headers before the break.

Brazil's best first-half effort came when Ronaldinho had a shot from a narrow angle turned around the post by Agustin Julio.

Colombia continued to press forward after half-time and Julio Cesar was forced to parry a long-range shot from substitute Freddy Grisales.

Aldo Ramirez also tested the goalkeeper with a low drive, but Colombia were unable to find their way past a packed Brazil defence.

Midfielder Mineiro had Brazil's only second half scoring chance when his 25-metre drive was turned away by Julio.

Seconds out, round two
(FIFA.com) Tuesday 16 October 2007

After last weekend's opening round of matches, the continent's aspirants are preparing for their second bouts as the battle for places at the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ intensifies. As usual, FIFA.com is here to preview the midweek bill, which is topped by Argentina's visit to fellow first-day victors Venezuela, the Pacific derby between Chile and Peru, and Brazil's bid for a maiden group win at home to Ecuador.

Tuesday night is football night in Venezuela
Venezuela v Argentina, Maracaibo, 16 October, 20:40 (local time)

The honour of kicking off the next round of games goes to Venezuela and Argentina, two of the three sides to open their campaigns with weekend wins. Fresh from an historic triumph in Ecuador, the Vinotinto are understandably full of optimism going into their first home appointment.

Visitors Argentina got going with a comfortable 2-0 win over Chile and return to the country where they performed so scintillatingly in the recent Copa America. And just as he did in July, the diminutive Lionel Messi caused a real stir when he flew into town for Tuesday's duel.

Key factors: Venezuela's hunger and enthusiasm versus Argentina's individual quality.
The duel: Juan Roman Riquelme v Juan Arango.
Past meetings: Venezuela have never taken a single point off Argentina. The last time the two met was on 17 November 2004, when the Albiceleste prevailed 3-2 in Buenos Aires.
What they say: "Obviously we respect Argentina, but our learning curve is over. Our aim now is to reach the World Cup finals." Richard Paez, Venezuela coach.

Brazil keen to make their point
Brazil v Ecuador, Rio de Janeiro, 17 October, 21:45 (local time)

Following a lacklustre draw with Colombia, Brazil will be out to banish the blues when they entertain Ecuador at the legendary Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Dunga's men will be hoping to draw inspiration from the vociferous home support and recapture the form that saw them storm to Copa America 2007 glory just a matter of months ago, form that was mysteriously lacking in Sunday's uninspiring stalemate.

For their part, Luis Suarez's side need to get some points on the board after a surprise loss at home to Venezuela. Not that the Tricolor boss should be holding out too much hope of that: in their last five outings away from Quito, the Ecuadorians have recorded a solitary win.

Key factors: The atmosphere at the Maracana, where Brazil have not played a game for seven years.
The duel: Kaka v Ivan Hurtado.
Past meetings: It has been ten years since Brazil and Ecuador last played out a draw. The only time there has been more than one goal between them in that period was a 1998 friendly.
What they say: "Ecuador always pose us problems because they've got some fine players and they are physically strong. This game will be no exception and we need to be on our toes." Dunga, Brazil coach.

Elsewhere
Rounding off the midweek menu are three other games in Santiago, Asuncion and La Paz on Wednesday evening, the pick of them the Pacific derby between old foes Chile and Peru. Adding a little spice to that long-running rivalry is the fact that both sides will be hunting their first wins. Recent history favours La Roja, who took the honours the last two times the teams met, a brace of friendlies in October 2006.

Paraguay will take to the field at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco intent on picking up three valuable points against an in-form Uruguay side buoyed by last Saturday's demolition of Bolivia. The Albirroja will certainly need to sharpen up their wayward finishing, which cost them two points on their trip to Peru, while their Uruguayan visitors can expect a much stiffer test than they received from their opening-day opponents.

Last but not least is the La Paz clash between Bolivia, who need to react quickly from a 5-0 loss to Uruguay if they are to maintain realistic qualification hopes, and a Colombia side bolstered by their commendable showing against the continental champions. The visitors have the weight of history against them, however, having only won once in the Bolivian capital, a 1-0 triumph at the Copa America in 1983.

Messi strike puts paid to Venezuela
(Reuters) Wednesday 17 October 2007

Lionel Messi added another superb goal to his collection to help Argentina beat Venezuela 2-0 away in a 2010 FIFA World Cup™ qualifier on Tuesday.

Messi struck two minutes before half-time after his Barcelona team mate Gabriel Milito had given Argentina the lead with his first goal for his country on his 30th appearance.

The win gave Argentina, who have won all 15 meetings with Venezuela, maximum points from their first two games in the qualifiers for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa.

Venezuela, the only South American team never to have played at the FIFA World Cup, have three points from two games after winning in Ecuador on Saturday.

Venezuela striker Giancarlo Maldonado wasted an early chance for the hosts when he fired over the crossbar after Juan Arango's incisive pass split the Argentina defence.

Argentina went ahead three minutes when defender Milito rose to head home Juan Roman Riquelme's free-kick.

Riquelme had scored both goals direct from free-kicks in Argentina's 2-0 win over Chile on Saturday.

Venezuela enjoyed plenty of possession but could not find the final pass and fell further behind two minutes before halftime.

Carlos Tevez broke down the right and pulled the ball back to the edge of the area where Messi breezed by one defender with his first touch, then unleashed an unstoppable shot past Renny Vega.

Venezuela enjoyed a flourish after the break as Juan Arango broke clear but shot straight at Roberto Abbondanzieri and Maldonado headed over from a corner.

Messi had the ball in the net again in the 65th minute but his effort was ruled out for offside.

As the Venezuelan defence opened up, Esteban Cambiasso hit the post for Argentina 10 minutes from time and debutant striker German Denis, who came on in the 81st minute, missed an easy chance in injury time.

Colombia draw another blank
(Reuters) Wednesday 17 October 2007

Colombia played out their second goalless draw in as many FIFA World Cup qualifiers when they were held away to Bolivia at high altitude on Wednesday.

Bolivia, who are also yet to score a goal, picked up their first point after losing 5-0 to Uruguay in their opening match last Saturday.

The hosts had midfielder Leonel Reyes sent off for a second bookable offence in the 69th minute.

Both teams created plenty of openings, although Colombia, held 0-0 by Brazil on Sunday, had the clearer chances.

Colombia goalkeeper Agustin Julio was tested by a flurry of long-range shots in the first half, turning away two from Limberg Gutierrez and another from Juan Carlos Arce.

Bolivia's best effort came from defender Santos Amador who headed against the crossbar from a corner.

At the other end, Colombia midfielder David Ferreira squandered a clear chance when he was sent clean through, but hesitated and shot weakly at Sergio Galarza.

Colombia, apparently unaffected by the altitude, got stronger in the second half.

Substitute Jaime Castrillon broke clear down the right but had his shot saved by Galarza, and Wason Renteria forced his way past two defenders and rounded Galarza, only to have his shot cleared off the line.

Carlos Sanchez then fired wildly over when he had a clear shot on goal from a narrow angle.

Valdez strike sees off Uruguay
(Reuters) Thursday 18 October 2007

Germany-based striker Nelson Haedo Valdez scored an early goal to give Paraguay a 1-0 win over Uruguay in a hard-fought FIFA World Cup™ qualifier on Wednesday.

The result left Paraguay with four points from their opening two games in the South American qualifying group. Uruguay, who beat Bolivia 5-0 on Saturday, remain on three.

Paraguay dominated the game against the Uruguayans, who fielded four defenders and three defensive midfielders in a cautious line-up, leaving Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez isolated in attack.

Paraguay, attempting to qualify for their fourth successive world finals, quickly took control and Cristian Riveros forced a good save from goalkeeper Fabian Carini in the tenth minute.

The hosts went ahead in the 15th minute when Salvador Cabanas picked up a loose ball, flicked it past Diego Godin, broke down the left and played a short pass to Haedo Valdez, who scored from close range.

Riveros went close again from the edge of the penalty area before Uruguay produced their first real chance. Forlan pulled the ball back from the byline and Cristian Rodriguez met it with a fierce, low drive which was superbly saved by Justo Villar.

Forlan was involved in Uruguay's only significant attack in the second half when he forced another good save from Villar in the 76th minute with a dipping effort from the edge of the penalty area.

Substitutes Oscar Cardozo and Jorge Achucarro wasted good chances to increase Paraguay's lead in the last ten minutes.

Chile beat Peru to kick-start campaign
(Reuters) Thursday 18 October 2007

Chile beat arch-rivals Peru 2-0 in a 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifier on Wednesday for their first win in a competitive game under new coach Marcelo Bielsa.

Striker Humberto Suazo and midfielder Matias Fernandez scored early in each half to secure Chile's first points of their campaign.

Chile, whose coach Bielsa led his native Argentina at Korea/Japan 2002, have three points from two games, while Peru, who have yet to score a goal, have one.

Suazo headed Chile ahead in the 11th minute from a corner, but the goal prompted the previously defensive Peruvians to come out of their shell.

In the 24th minute, Peru forward Jefferson Farfan sped past Waldo Ponce and produced a powerful shot which was superbly turned away by Claudio Bravo.

Nolberto Solano and Juan Vargas also missed chances to equalise before half-time and, early in the second half, Farfan just failed to connect with Vargas's low cross with the goal at his mercy.

Chile increased their lead in the 51st minute when Arturo Vidal cleverly flicked the ball over the Peru defence to Fernandez, who slipped it past Leao Butron.

Mark Gonzalez, Hugo Droguett and Suazo were all close to adding a third with long-range shots as the hosts took control towards the end.

Brazil make easy meat of Ecuador
(Reuters) Thursday 18 October 2007

Brazil thumped Ecuador 5-0 in a FIFA World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, celebrating their first home match for two years and first at the Maracana stadium since 2000 in style.

Vagner Love gave Brazil a 19th-minute lead just as the 70,000 crowd was getting impatient and the five-times world champions added four goals in a 12-minute spell late in the game.

Kaka struck twice, once with an exquisite curling shot and another with the help of a goalkeeping blunder by Daniel Viteri, and Ronaldinho and Elano also found the net.

The result was rough justice on Ecuador, who controlled the game for nearly one hour and threatened to snatch a point until Brazil's late flourish.

Heavyweights return to action
(FIFA.com) Friday 16 November 2007

While the final preparations are being put into place for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ Preliminary Draw, to be held on 25 November in Durban, the eyes of planet football are turning to South America. As spring slowly gives way to summer in the southern hemisphere, this weekend sees the third matchday of qualifiers for the 2010 showpiece.

Read on as FIFA.com takes a look at the footballing menu down in South America, including the return to action of regional heavyweights Brazil and Argentina and exciting clashes between Colombia-Venezuela, Paraguay-Ecuador and Uruguay-Chile.

Revenge mission
Colombia-Venezuela, 17 November, 16:10 (local time), Bogota

Turn the clock back around four years, to 15 November 2003, and you would find the Colombian camp in confident mood ahead of Venezuela's visit to steamy Barranquilla. Yet Richard Paez's Vinotinto charges shocked their hosts to come away with a 1-0 success, and the Venezuelan strategist fully intends for history to repeat itself against the Cafeteros, currently coached by Jorge Luis Pinto.

Events thus far would suggest the pair are direct rivals for a qualifying berth, and three points for either could prove decisive in the final reckoning. Throw in the derby atmosphere that always ensues when these national sides meet and the fans watching the game at altitude in Bogota can expect a pulsating encounter.

The talking points: Will Colombia overcome their attacking travails against their up-and-coming opponents? The Cafeteros have failed to score in both their qualifiers so far.

The head-to-head: Radamel Falcao and Juan Arango.

The past: On their last trip to Colombian soil in 2003, Juan Arango's solitary strike sealed a 1-0 win for Venezuela.

The words: "Matches against Venezuela have always got that special derby flavour. Last time around they beat us on our own patch, but we're hoping to make home advantage count and start writing our own little piece of history." Colombia keeper, Agustin Julio.

History favours Brazil
Peru-Brazil, 18 November, 16:10 (local time), Lima

Copa America 2007 winners Brazil have yet to unleash all their fearsome potential thus far in qualifying, despite lying in second place, unbeaten and fresh from a resounding victory over Ecuador. On Sunday they visit Jose Del Solar's struggling Peru side, who have just one point from their first two qualifiers.

History clearly favours Dunga's men, the Seleção never having lost a qualifying match against the Incaicos. Can the Peruvians, in dire need of a positive result, rewrite the record books?

The talking points: Brazil are not only unbeaten in qualifying matches on Peruvian soil, but have found the net at least once on each of their four visits.

The head-to-head: Robinho and Jefferson Farfan.

The past: The Auriverde's last qualifier away to Peru, on 16 November 2003, ended in a 1-1 draw.

The words: "Brazil have good players, but none of them have four legs or four hands. They've had the upper hand in recent encounters but this is something else entirely. We can't afford to give them any space." Peru midfielder, Norberto Solano.

Plenty more to come
The weekend's action includes another three matches, one of them involving Alfio Basile's Argentina - in first place on maximum points. El Coco has a virtually full-strength squad at his disposal as the unbeaten Albiceleste prepare to host Bolivia on Saturday, who have never taken so much as a point from Buenos Aires.

Also on Saturday, Paraguay are aiming for a second successive win in Asuncion when they welcome Ecuador, who have lost both their games so far and are desperate for a positive result to boost their flagging hopes of a third consecutive FIFA World Cup finals' appearance. The statistics favour the Albirroja, who have emerged victorious in every home qualifier against the Tricolor.

The final game is set to be played on Sunday and pits two serious contenders for a qualifying berth, Uruguay and Chile, against each other in Montevideo. The Celeste cut loose in their only home match so far and are aiming for a repeat performance against Marcelo Bielsa's Chile team. Can El Loco inspire La Roja to pick up their first-ever qualifying points from Uruguay's imposing Estadio Centenario?

Third matchday of South American qualifying
