Black Cats swoop for Higginbotham
Sunderland have captured defender Danny Higginbotham from Stoke City.
The Black Cats today paid £3m for the centre-back who signed a four-year contract this afternoon after passing a medical.
RoyKeane, once Higginbotham's team-mate at Manchester United, said: "I'mpleased that, after long negotiations, we've signed a player of Danny'squality.
"I know him personally and he's a great character. Hecan play at centre-half or left-back so his versatility will be a bigplus for us."
Higginbotham, 28, is the second defender to signfor the Black Cats today, following ex-Leeds star Ian Harte to theStadium of Light.
Higginbotham started his career at United,playing seven times for the Old Trafford club before joining DerbyCounty in July 2000 for £2m.
After three years at Pride Park, heleft for Southampton in a £1.5m deal in 2003 and quickly establishedhimself as a regular - clocking up more than 100 appearances for theSaints.
Higginbotham, Sunderland's 11th signing since they wonpromotion, moved to Stoke a year ago and captained the Potters lastseason.
Keane pays £6m for Jones
Roy Keane completed a trio of signings today by paying Southampton £6m for Kenwyne Jones.
Jones,a striker, is the 12th player to join Keane's squad this summer andfollows Ian Harte and Danny Higginbotham through the Stadium of Lightdoors today.
Keane said: "I'm delighted that Kenwyne is a our player. He was very keen to join the club which is always a good thing.
"He'sa big, strong boy who is quick and athletic too. He has a real physicalpresence and is the type of player that we've been missing."
Trinidadand Tobago player Jones' move to Sunderland sees Stern John, hisone-time international team-mate, go the other way to St Mary's.
Joneshas signed a four-year contract at the Stadium of Light, becoming theclub's third most expensive signing after Craig Gordon and Tore AndreFlo.
The frontman, who moved to England in 2004, netted 14 League goals from 25 starts for the Saints last season.
Joneshad loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke during his time atSouthampton, playing for the Potters at the Stadium of Light in May2005 as Sunderland celebrated promotion. |
