Lavezzi Was Milan Target
AC Milan scout Cesare Maldini has let it be known that the club were close to making a move for Napoli's new Argentine star Ezequiel Lavezzi over the summer but dropped their interest in the player as soon as Alexandre Pato became available.
Lavezzi is already a big hit amongst Napoli fans following his prodigious display during the 5-0 victory at Udinese last matchday, and Maldini acknowledges that the Azzurri got a real gem.
"Milan wanted Lavezzi,” admitted the former Italy coach. "We followed him for a very long time and had many positive notes on him”.
"However, then Pato became available and we took him instead," Maldini Snr added.
Lavezzi, 22, arrived from San Lorenzo this summer as a relatively unknown in Italy, but with a big reputation in his native Argentina where he is often referred to as the 'New Tevez'.
It is a far bigger Argentine legend that the Napoli faithful think of during the three competitive games in which they have seen Lavezzi play – he even bagged a hattrick during the 4-0 Coppa Italia victory over Cesena - but the compactly built forward is quick to downplay the comparisons to El Diego.
"Me the new Maradona? Now that's exaggeration," he said.
"The idolisation is already too much to take for me. And then to be likened to the great Diego, that is exaggerated."
"Anyway, I will try to keep calm amid all this," he continued. "All I am going to try to do is to bring more happiness to my friends, and to the Napoli faithful.
"I am simply trying to do my job well."
