Juande Ramos has resigned from his job as coach of Sevilla ahead of an imminent appointment as Martin Jol's successor at Tottenham.

Sevilla director of football Ramon Rodriguez has already negotiated with Spurs over compensation for Ramos, who has reportedly agreed a four-year deal with the north London club.

Ramos, who has led Sevilla to successive Uefa Cup triumphs in the last two seasons, said it had been a difficult decision to leave Andalucia.

"This has been the hardest decision of my life. My heart remains in Seville but for the sake of my family and career it is impossible not to leave for London," he said on his personal website.

"My time at Sevilla has been the most important period of my life personally and professionally. I will be eternally grateful."

A statement on the official Sevilla website revealed that the 53-year-old had handed his papers in to club president Jose Maria Del Nido on Friday evening.

Spurs reportedly want Leeds assistant boss Gus Poyet to assist Ramos, who only speaks basic English.

The club are looking for a swift replacement for Jol in an effort to salvage their season after a poor start that has left them in the bottom three of the Premiership.

Spurs ask coach Segers to step down

The staff exodus at Tottenham following Martin Jol's sacking last night has continued today with goalkeeping coach Hans Segers leaving the club with immediate effect.

Jol and long-serving assistant boss Chris Hughton were asked to step down last night before overseeing the side's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Getafe, with Sevilla boss Juande Ramos thought to be the club's number one target.

Whoever does take the job looks likely to have the chance to bring his own staff to White Hart Lane after Jol's fellow Dutchman Segers, a former goalkeeper with the club, was asked to vacate his post.

Sporting director Damien Comolli said: 'Hans has been a committed and enthusiastic member of the coaching staff and we should like to thank him for his contribution and hard work.'

Academy goalkeeping coach Perry Suckling will take the role on a temporary basis.

Ramos, who left the UEFA Cup champions on Friday clearing his way for a move to north London, has signed a four-year deal with Spurs, the club announced.

His first game in charge will be against Blackpool in the Carling Cup on Wednesday, with development coach Clive Allen and youth team boss Alex Inglethorpe in charge for SUnday's Premier League clash against Blackburn.

"I greatly appreciate the opportunity to work as head coach at Tottenham Hotspur, a club with a great tradition and history," Ramos said.

"Ever since I started my coaching career I have wanted to work in England. It is my sincere hope that I can repay the faith the Spurs Board has shown in me."

"I am looking forward to meeting the players; it is a squad any coach would be excited to work with . I genuinely believe that there is the potential to achieve great things together."

"I was hugely impressed with the Spurs fans both home and away when Sevilla played Spurs last season and it will be a privilege to be the coach of this club with the huge support it enjoys both at White Hart Lane and throughout the world."

Spurs, who have toiled to one win in ten Premier League games this season and lie third-from bottom in the table, sacked Jol on Thursday in the middle of a 2-1 UEFA Cup loss to Getafe and were eager to unveil their highly sought after replacement.

"Juande's arrival is great news for Tottenham Hotspur. He brings with him a wealth of experience, a proven track record and a winning pedigree," said sporting director Damien Comolli.

"Now is the time for us to regroup and look to deliver the results and performances that everyone associated with the Club wants to see.

"By making the appointment at this stage of the season, with our current, talented group of players, we have given ourselves the opportunity to compete well in all four competitions."

"Juande is a highly respected coach and his agreement to join us is excellent news. I know he is eager to get started."

Marcos Alvarez, one of Ramos' assistants at Sevilla, also joins Spurs in a similar role.
