Two months after the tragic death of Antonio Puerta, the Sevilla midfielder's son has been born. The player's girlfriend has named him Aitor Antonio...
The tragic demise of Antonio Puerta has at least seen new life in the form of the late player's son.
He and his girlfriend, Mar Roldan, had been expecting for just under seven months prior to the player's death in August, and now she has given birth to the couple's first and only son.
The pair had already settled on the name Aitor, a name of Basque origins, with Mar adding Antonio as a middle name in honour of the child's father.
Upon his arrival, the baby was given the title of Sevilla FC member number 45,284, and will be allowed to wear Puerta's retired number 16 shirt should he ever make the breakthrough with the Nervion side.
Puerta tragically passed away days after collapsing on the pitch during Sevilla's 4-1 win over Getafe on the opening day of the season; although he was able to walk to the dressing room unaided, he lapsed into unconsciousness soon after, dying later in hospital.
The name Aitor is of unclear roots, but one theory is that it is said to mean 'noble', stemming from the name of a god in Basque folklore. |
