Big doubts over the return of Fabregas, Hleb and Clichy

Arsène Wenger is an eternal optimist so he is hopeful Cesc Fabregas, Alex Hleb and Gael Clichy will be back for Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa.

Realistically there are major question marks over all three, especially the Spanish midfielder who injured his hamstring against Sevilla on Tuesday.

Fabregas is likely to face a fitness test on Friday but Wenger admitted his medical experts did not share his hopes. Meanwhile Clichy (thigh) and Hleb (hamstring) were described as having “a slight chance”. Mathieu Flamini is back but Robin van Persie (knee) is still absent.

“I don’t know how long it will be for Cesc,” Wenger told Arsenal TV Online on Thursday afternoon. “We hope it will be very, very, very short maybe he’ll even be OK for Saturday. But the medical staff are not optimistic about that. The worst case for him realistically is 10 days.

“We have a slight chance to get Gael Clichy and Alexander Hleb back. Mathieu Flamini will be available. Of course Van Persie is still out.”

Van Persie out for another 'two or three weeks'

Robin van Persie is still “two or three weeks” from full fitness.

The striker last played for Arsenal on October 7 when he struck twice in the 3-2 win over Sunderland at Emirates Stadium. He injured his knee in the international break that followed and has been out of action ever since.

Arsène Wenger was hopeful the 24-year-old would be back for last weekend’s game with Wigan. That estimation has had to be re-assessed. Now he is set to return just before the Christmas rush of games.

“Van Persie is out,” said Wenger ahead of Saturday’s game at Aston Villa. “It will be two or three more weeks.”

The manager said the problem was bigger than first thought, adding: “There is still pain. He is not close, he has no chance at all for next week.”

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is set to return to face Fulham after recovering from his ankle injury.

Rooney will link up with Carlos Tevez up front and United could give recalls to Ryan Giggs, Owen Hargreaves, Edwin van der Sar and Wes Brown too.

Fulham full-back Moritz Volz will not play despite a reserve outing after his shoulder, groin and foot problems.

Phillipe Christanval, Kasey Keller, Lee Cook, Ian Pearce, Brian McBride, Simon Elliot and Jimmy Bullard are also out.

Rooney hands United boss Sir Alex Ferguson a major boost after they slipped up with a 1-0 defeat at Bolton last weekend in the Premier League.

The England striker has missed three United matches and two England games since suffering the freak injury in training.
