Rui Costa Announces Retirement At End Of Season
Benfica star Manuel Rui Costa has announced that he will retire from professional football at the end of the current season.
The 35-year-old has had a glittering career but is perhaps best remembered for his 12 years in Italy with Fiorentina and Milan.
Between 2001 and 2006 Rui Costa played 169 games for the Rossoneri and won one Scudetto, one Champions League and one European Supercup. He is fondly remembered by the Milan supporters and was given a standing ovation by the San Siro crowd during a Champions League game in September.
The ex-Portugal international, who was capped 94 times by his country also played for Fiorentina for seven seasons forging an excellent understanding with the legendary Gabriel Batistuta.
Having played for Benfica from 1991 to 1994, he rejoined the club in 2006 and has been enjoying something of a renaissance this season.
“I had always desired to end my career at Benfica and I am proud to have achieved that,” Rui Costa told local newspaper ‘Record.’
