Bolton set to win battle for Villa stopper Cahill

Aston Villa central defender Gary Cahill finally looks poised to complete a move to Bolton.

The two clubs are understood to be close to agreeing a fee of between £4.5 and £5million.

Villa boss Martin O'Neill had rejected an initial bid from Bolton for the academy product - plus another from local rivals Birmingham.

But it appears Cahill, who has just returned from a three-month loan stint at Sheffield United, could finally be heading for the Reebok Stadium.

A Villa source said: 'There is nothing concrete decided but it wouldn't be a surprise if something happened in the next 24 hours or so.'

Cahill has found himself fourth choice central defender at Villa behind Martin Laursen, Curtis Davies and Zat Knight.

O'Neill is under no pressure to sell Cahill but recognises his desire to play regular first-team football, something he could not guarantee him at Villa.

The Villa boss also has to decide on the future of another defender, long-serving Olof Mellberg, after confirming a bid had been received from Juventus for the Sweden international.

Mellberg had been content to complete the current campaign with Villa and help them push for a European spot before ending a seven-year spell at the club.

But Juventus have made it clear they want to sign the 30-year-old before the transfer window closes - and that could depend on whether O'Neill has another right-back lined up.

The Irishman is also being linked with goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who plays for MLS side Chivas and has just completed a trial with Celtic, plus Tottenham wide player Wayne Routledge.

A Villa spokesman said: 'Our policy is not to comment on any transfers until they are signed and sealed.'

Official: Stendardo Signs For Juve Juventus have completed the signing of Lazio defender Guglielmo Stendardo on loan until the end of the season.

The 26-year-old was certain to leave the Biancocelesti this month after an explosive falling-out with Coach Delio Rossi, ironically after a 3-2 defeat to Juve last month.   

Stendardo handed in a transfer request to President Claudio Lotito, which led to a host of clubs reportedly tabling bids, including Premiership-duo Fulham and Birmingham.   

However the Neapolitan was determined to stay in the peninsula, and has agreed to a loan move to Juventus until the end of the season.

“The contract has been agreed for defender Guglielmo Stendardo to join on loan until June 30 and he will be presented to the Press at 1pm,” a Bianconeri club statement reads.   

Juve had been in desperate need to snap up some defenders this month as Giorgio Chiellini, Jonathan Zebina and Jorge Andrade are all injured, while Domenico Criscito (loan) and Jean-Alain Boumsong have been offloaded.   

Stendardo, 26, was impressive last season as Lazio finished third in Serie A. However this season he has put in a string of near-disastrous performances.   

He could make his Juve debut this Wednesday in the Coppa Italia quarter-final second leg clash with Inter at the Stadio Olimpico. The score is tied at 2-2 from the first leg last week.

Wenger - I am not after Jonathan Woodgate

Arsène Wenger has denied any interest in signing Jonathan Woodgate.

The Middlesbrough centre back is in the process of a move away from the Riverside Stadium after Tottenham and Newcastle agreed a fee with the North-East club.

On Monday morning, it was reported that a third team had matched that valuation and speculation centred on Arsenal.

Speaking to the Matchday Programme ahead of the game with Newcastle, Wenger laid the rumour to rest.

“I do not know where that story came from,” he said. “There is no truth in it at all. We have never been in touch with Middlesbrough about Jonathan Woodgate.”

Leeds United have refused to comment on rumours that manager Dennis Wise will join Kevin Keegan's regime at Newcastle United.

Wise, who played under Keegan with England, has been linked with a move to St James' Park after it was confirmed Alan Shearer would not be returning as his assistant.

According to the Yorkshire Evening Post, the role Newcastle have earmarked for Wise is a director of football position.

The Premier League side are believed to have approached Leeds and offered Wise a position with the North East club, although The Whites say talk of their manager leaving is pure speculation.

Compensation

Reports have claimed that Newcastle are confident of agreeing terms with Wise should a suitable compensation package be reached with Leeds chairman Ken Bates.

However, Leeds expect Wise, who has been in charge of the League One club since September 2006, to be at the helm for their league match against Southend at Roots Hall on Tuesday night.

"We don't comment on speculation," stated a Leeds spokesman.

"We have an important game at Southend on Tuesday night and Dennis is preparing his team for that."

Should Wise depart Elland Road it would be yet more turmoil for Leeds' backroom staff after former assistant manager Gus Poyet left for Spurs earlier this season.
