Magpies confidence is low - Owen

Newcastle captain Michael Owen says the club's poor form has hit the players' confidence as the Magpies try to avoid being sucked into a relegation battle.
The Magpies have not won under manager Kevin Keegan and are only six points above the relegation zone.

"Confidence isn't at its best," striker Owen, 28, told BBC Radio 5 Live. "There is nervousness throughout the side.

"We need a win and the sooner the better. As soon as we get that I think confidence will come flooding back."

Keegan returned to the club in January and over the next month his side face matches against Blackburn, Liverpool, Birmingham, Fulham and Tottenham in a bid to accumulate enough points to avoid a struggle against the drop in the run-in to the season.

However, Newcastle captain Owen insists there is no panic in the Newcastle ranks, with 11 games left to play.

"We've got an awful lot of games left and we aren't in the relegation zone at the moment," said the England forward.

"We're not at panic stations but we are obviously well aware we need to get a result - and fast.

"This game against Blackburn on Saturday is one you look at and think Newcastle at home should be getting something out of it.

"If we can do that we can get a bit of confidence. We then play Liverpool and after that we have got a few games that are winnable.

"If we can get some confidence going into those games then I'm sure we can push onwards and upwards."

Hicks ready to block sale

Tom Hicks has hinted for the first time that his relationship with George Gillett has broken down after claiming he will block any attempt by his co-owner to sell his half share of Liverpool.

American Hicks insisted he had no intention of parting with his own 50 per cent stake in the Anfield club earlier this week despite renewed interest from Dubai International Capital (DIC).
It is believed Gillett, who completed an unpopular takeover at Liverpool last year with Hicks after they edged out a rival bid from DIC, is interested in selling his share to the investment arm of the Maktoum royal family.

However, Hicks claims he has the ability to scupper any deal as he has first say on his business partner's stake.

He told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram: "Not only am I not going to sell, my partner cannot sell without my approval.

Referring to the future of the club, he added: "For a lot of reasons I can't discuss, I haven't been able to fix it yet.

"But I am preparing to be in a position to fix it."

Van Persie and Djourou are back in training

Robin van Persie came back to full training on Friday.

The Dutchman will not figure against Aston Villa or Milan but his return is welcome news after the loss of Eduardo for the season with a broken leg.

Van Persie has played only three games since late October because of injury. He has been out since early January because of a thigh problem. He was one of two players back on the field at the training ground on Friday.

"The news is good," said Wenger. "It is Robin's first time back in full training. He looks quite good but I won't rush him back because I have made that mistake before.

"The other one who is back is Johan Djourou but he is not in the squad tomorrow."

The only player returning for the game against Villa on Saturday is Abou Diaby. The full list of absentees is: Alex Song (knee), Tomas Rosicky (hamstring), Kolo Toure (calf), Johan Djourou (groin), Van Persie (thigh) and Emmanuel Eboue (suspended).
