Cuper delight at super start
Thursday 20 March, 2008
Parma’s new boss Hector Cuper has had a dream start to life at the Stadio Tardini and he was buoyant after last night’s win over Palermo.
A last-gasp Igor Budan penalty saw the Ducali triumph 2-1 and took Cuper’s tally to four points from his first two games.
President Tommaso Ghirardi has stressed his faith in the new man and there seems to a renewed belief in the Crociati camp.
“I’m very happy because the team has reflected the values of my football – grit, courage and solidarity,” the ex-Inter Coach beamed.
“We played well to stop Palermo playing their kind of football and we fought hard all the way from front to back.
“When we went down to 10 men I wanted to show my trust in the team, so I didn’t make any substitutions and I just asked the lads for a big effort with Reginaldo, Budan and Andrea Gasbarroni having to make sacrifices.
“This win doesn’t mean that we can relax, as in Italian football you never can, but it gives us confidence.
“It was an important win on a psychological level and we are going to Siena on Saturday to get three points.”
Parma remain a single point above the drop zone and have a daunting test against Juventus in Week 31.
Zampa to call back Colantuono?
Thursday 20 March, 2008
Rumours are circulating that Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini will sack Francesco Guidolin and reinstate Stefano Colantuono.
The notoriously impatient Zamparini axed former Atalanta boss Colantuono at the end of November with the Sicilians in sixth place and brought Guidolin back for his third spell at the club.
However, things have deteriorated under the new man and the Rosanero are now locked in mid-table and realistically out of the race for UEFA Cup football after a 2-1 defeat against lowly Parma.
Zampa insisted that he wouldn’t give Guidolin the push last night, but he seems angrier in the cold light of day.
“Guidolin’s attitude isn’t positive,” he told Stadionews. “It isn’t possible to get through a game with 10 men with a single striker.
“Does Guidolin lack courage as a Coach? The truth is that he doesn’t believe in his team any longer and the players are feeling that.”
Colantuono is still under contract at the Stadio Renzo Barbera and could return immediately if called upon.
