Cech doubt for Fener clash

Petr Cech is a doubt for Chelsea's Champions League clash with Fenerbahce after the goalkeeper reportedly suffered a head injury in a training ground collision.

The 25-year-old - who has only recently returned to training following a period out with ankle ligament damage - sustained a gash to his head after colliding with a team-mate on Sunday, according to reports in the Czech Republic.

The news comes as a blow to Blues boss Avram Grant, who was expected to recall the shot stopper to the side for Tuesday's clash at Stamford Bridge.

A source close to Chelsea told Pravo: "The doctor went with him to hospital and diagnosed the problem as a lacerated wound.

"Petr has undergone a surgical intervention. We know nothing more for the present.

"He has been in full training but it cannot be said if he will be ready for Tuesday's Champions League game against Fenerbahce."

Cech, who has not featured for Chelsea since the beginning of March with, has been forced to play with a protective helmet since he fractured his skull in a collision with Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt in October 2006.

Chelsea head into the second leg of their quarter-final with Fenerbahce hoping to overturn a 2-1 deficit after last week's defeat in Istanbul.

Van Persie worry

Robin van Persie again looks to be a major doubt for Arsenal ahead of Tuesday's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Liverpool.

The Holland striker has been struggling with a thigh muscle problem and missed the 1-1 Premier League draw at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Manager Arsene Wenger rested several key men, and is likely to recall leading scorer Emmanuel Adebayor, Alexander Hleb, Gael Clichy and Philippe Senderos to the starting line-up at Anfield.

Midfielder Abou Diaby is available as his suspension is only domestic, but full-back Bacary Sagna (ankle) and Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) remain sidelined.

Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand did not suffer a broken metatarsal during the 2-2 draw at Middlesbrough, the club confirmed.

It was feared that the England defender, who recently skippered his country in the 1-0 friendly defeat against France, could miss the rest of the season after he limped off late in the match.

It is unclear whether Ferdinand, 29, will be available for Wednesday's Champions League quarter final second leg clash with Roma at Old Trafford.

United lead 2-0 and are also missing fellow centre half Nemanja Vidic with a knee injury picked up in the first leg.

Former West Ham and Leeds stopper Ferdinand left the Riverside with his foot in a protective cast, and United remained tight-lipped until the results of an MRI scan were received on Monday.

John O'Shea, Wes Brown and Gerard Pique are all available to deputise with United now potentially missing their first-choice defensive partnership in the season run-in.

Pique looks like the most likely candidate to partner Brown, with O'Shea set to play right-back.

"Pique came on and did absolutely terrific, he was absolutely marvellous and I think that helped us actually," United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said.

Meanwhile, Francesco Totti has been left out of Roma's squad with a thigh problem.

The Giallorossi captain missed the weekend's 3-2 win over Genoa and his name did not feature on the squad list published on the club's official website.

Roma boss Luciano Spalletti had said after Saturday's win in Rome that it might be better for Totti to miss the United game and fully recover for next weekend's Serie A clash at Udinese.

Second-placed Roma are four points behind Internazionale in the race for the Italian title with the domestic championship now taking priority over the Champions League given the unlikelihood of overhauling United.

PETR CECH’S season is over after a horror clash with Tal Ben-Haim in training.


The Chelsea keeper was due to return for tonight’s Champions League tie against Fenerbahce.


But he needed 50 stitches in a gashed face and cosmetic surgery following an accidental collision with Ben-Haim.


A Blues source said: e could tell right away it was very serious by the way big Pete went down and the amount of blood. This one looks like it will end his season.

Kazim-Richards, who played for Bury, Brighton and Sheffield United, said: or me, it’s a bit personal being an Arsenal fan. The fact that it’s Chelsea makes it special for me. We are coming here to win.?
