Rooney and Vidic miss training

Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic are both major doubts for Manchester United's Champions League semi-final second leg against Barcelona after missing training on Monday.

The pair both suffered injuries during Saturday's 2-1 Premier League defeat at Chelsea and have less than 36 to recover in time for Tuesday's game at Old Trafford.

Vidic was left groggy and bloodied with a split lip after an accidental collision with Didier Drogba in the first half, while Rooney appeared to injure his hip in the act of scoring United's equaliser.

If Rooney is out, Alex Ferguson will have little option but to deploy Carlos Tevez as a lone striker supported by Cristiano Ronaldo.

If Vidic misses out, Ferguson may once again deploy Owen Hargreaves as a makeshift right-back with Wes Brown in central defence. Mikael Silvestre and John O'Shea are also available.

Tevez, Hargreaves, Cristiano Ronaldo, Patrice Evra and Paul Scholes are all expected to return to the starting XI after sitting out the weekend fixture.

Lampard returns to Blues training

Frank Lampard is back in training at Chelsea with a view to playing in the Champions League semi-final second leg against Liverpool.Lampard missed Chelsea's 2-1 Premier League win over Manchester United on Saturday following the death of his mother Pat from pneumonia last Thursday.

But the England midfielder is understood to have trained on Sunday and is expected to be back with the rest of the squad on Monday.

Meanwhile, it is understood that Chelsea have yet to receive a request from the Football Association for the CCTV footage of the post-match scuffle between a number of United players and their groundstaff.

United defender Patrice Evra is believed to have been at the centre of the row and the 27-year-old is expected to give his account of the incident to officials of the Old Trafford club on Monday.

It is also believed that Chelsea and Manchester United chief executives Peter Kenyon and David Gill have discussed the incident.

Manchester United duo Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic both sat out training on Monday ahead of Tuesday's Champions League visit of Barcelona.The absence of the key pair from the session at Carrington casts doubts about their availability for the semi-final second leg against Barca at Old Trafford.

Rooney took a knock to his hip before scoring the equaliser in the 2-1 Premier League defeat at Chelsea on Saturday, while Vidic suffered a facial injury.

United are aiming to book a place in the final in Moscow after a 0-0 draw at the Nou Camp last week.

A four-man group comprising Rio Ferdinand, Owen Hargreaves, Michael Carrick and Wes Brown trained away from the rest of the squad at the beginning of the session.

With United looking to book a place in the final, they will be banking on Rooney to recover on time.

The England striker took his tally for the season to 18 goals at Stamford Bridge.

Serbian centre-back Vidic, who missed the first leg because of a stomach infection, saw just eight minutes of action against Chelsea.

He was stretchered off after taking a knee in the face following a tussle with Didier Drogba.

Darren Fletcher is looking to retain his place in the side after making his comeback from a knee injury against Chelsea.

i think vidic is okay, fergie insisted that vidic could have back into the game after 15-20 mins treatment but he couldn't afford playing with 10 men in such a big game, so subs him out.

he defeinitely won't be full fit tmr but i think he can play.
i saw him suffered the pain before he scored, but still he made that shot, i guess he's okay as well.

Both players were substituted during Saturday's defeat at Chelsea and there is concern that Tuesday night will come too soon for the pair as they recover from facial (Vidic) and hip problems (Rooney).

"Obviously for such an important game, we’ve got to give them every chance," said Sir Alex, at Monday's pre-match press conference.

"Nemanja didn’t train yesterday or today, neither did Wayne. It’s a difficult one. We think both could make it but I can’t be dead certain.”

What does seem certain is that Cristiano Ronaldo will return to the starting line-up, fresh from being a sub on Saturday and being crowned PFA Player of the Year on Sunday.

Patrice Evra could also come back in, despite being one booking away from missing the final. Mikael Silvestre performed impressively in Evra's absence at left-back but has only just returned to the fold after a lengthy spell out with injury.
