Juventus president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli has revealed the representative of Xabi Alonso is expected in Italy on Wednesday to discuss a potential transfer from Liverpool.



Alonso struggled for first-team football at Anfield last season due to a lack of form and fitness and rumour has been rife that the Spanish midfielder is set to leave Liverpool this summer.


Although Alonso regained a place in the Reds' first XI towards the end of the campaign following a tactical reshuffle by manager Rafa Benitez, it is expected that the possible arrival of Aston Villa captain Gareth Barry would put his position under greater pressure.


Juventus manager Claudio Ranieri, who signed former Liverpool midfielder Mohammed Sissoko in the January transfer window, has made no secret of his admiration of Alonso, 26, and Gigli is optimistic a deal can be struck.


"It looks like his representative will arrive today," said Gigli when asked about the possible signing of Alonso.


"We can't deny that we're interested, but there's always the problem of getting value for money.


"(Managing director Jean-Claude) Blanc is working on this and on other possibilities."

Johan Djourou has offered his services to Arsene Wenger next season as a midfielder.

The Swiss international is a centre-half by trade, but having found first-team opportunities hard to come by at Arsenal he is prepared to try his hand at a role further up the field.

With Mathieu Flamini having left the Gunners for Milan, Wenger must now decide who will partner Cesc Fabregas in the middle of the park next year.

Brazilian duo Gilberto Silva and Denilson are ready-made replacements in the holding role, but Djourou is adamant that he too could adapt his game to fill the void.

"Playing in front of the defence is the position where my qualities are expressed best," he told Tribune de Geneve.

"Arsene Wenger says this to me too. Unfortunately, we do not play a system which enables me to hold this spot, like Claude Makelele does with Chelsea.

"I have not had many possibilities of showing my midfield capabilities. I hope my chance will come in the next few years."

Meanwhile, Neal Reynolds has joined Arsenal from Norwich as an assistant physio to Gary Lewin.

The Canaries were keen to retain Reynolds' services but were forced to accept that the lure of working in the Premier League was too great.

"Neal is an excellent physio and we would have liked to have kept him," Glenn Roeder told Norwich's official website.

"However, this is a good opportunity for him and we wish him all the best."

Veteran striker Brian McBride is to return to America after calling time on his Fulham career.

The 35-year-old moved to Craven Cottage in 2004 and went on to make over 150 appearances for the club.

He suffered a serious injury at the start of last season and missed much of Fulham's campaign, but he returned to play a key part in their successful battle against relegation.

McBride scored 40 goals for Fulham in total but he has now confirmed that he will be moving on this summer.

"After much consideration with my family, we have decided to leave Fulham after four and a half fantastic years," McBride told the club's official website.

"I have always stated my intention to return to America at some stage and this seems like the right moment in my career to move on.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the club, the chairman, the staff and wonderful fans for all their support, on and off the pitch, during my time at Fulham.

"I take great pride in the fact that my last appearance for Fulham saw the club maintain its Premier League status.

"I leave with some wonderful memories from my time at Fulham and the Club will always be in my heart.

"I would like to wish the Club, Roy Hodgson and my team mates every success for the future."

Hodgson thanks

Manager Roy Hodgson has paid tribute to the departing striker and praised his professional attitude.

"Brian McBride has been a fine ambassador for Fulham Football Club," said Hodgson.

"As my captain last season Brian was truly respected in the dressing room and led by example on the pitch.

"His attitude is second to none - Brian is a true pro in every sense of the word. On behalf of the club I would like to thank Brian for his valuable contribution over the last four and a half years.

"I would personally like to thank him for his contribution and assistance to me and my staff over the last five months. His performances helped us retain our Premier League status.

"The club would have liked Brian to stay for at least another year but respect the decision he has made with his family and I wish him every success for the future."

Nasri 99% Sure of Arsenal Move

After nearly three weeks of speculation seems that Samir Nasri's move to Arsenal is on the brink of completion as he told RTL that the deal was proceeding “normally”…


Samir Nasri tonight confirmed to French radio station RTL that his transfer to English giants Arsenal is progressing “normally” and the deal should be concluded over the course of the next few days.

Arsenal appear to be linked with every hot young French talent however it appears that there was substance in the rumours that Nasri's could move to north London.  

Nasri's interview with RTL was the first time that he has spoken of his move to the Gunners, who he is “99% certain” of joining in time for the start of next season.

The saga started immediately after the final game of the season, a dramatic victory over Strasbourg, when Nasri hinted that it would be his last for Marseille. Speculation that the talented creative midfielder would move to Arsenal was fuelled by his agent and finally the deal is close to being closed.

Marseille's brightest prospect had a highly effective performance in yesterday's 2-0 victory over Ecuador with the French national side, linking well with Nicolas Anelka and Bafetimbi Gomis to act as a catalyst for the opening goal.  

Raymond Domenech elected to keep the 20 year-old in his 30 man squad on the back of this showing and other impressive performances towards the end of a season that Nasri helped guide Marseille to third spot in the French league and therefore a potential Champions League berth.

Nasri will turn 21 during the European Championships and will wish to celebrate his birthday with an appearance in the final with les Bleus.
