Sir Alex Ferguson's reputed anger at Aaron Ramsey's decision to snub Manchester United in favour of Arsenal may turn to embarrassment following reports that it was the Scot's failure to meet the youngster in person that proved decisive.
While the 17-year-old enjoyed face-to-face meetings with Everton's David Moyes and Arsene Wenger, neither Ferguson nor Carlos Queiroz were present when Ramsey travelled to Old Trafford last week. It is understood that Ramsey was instead guided around the stadium and the club's training ground by Gary Neville.
In sharp contrast, Arsenal arranged for Ramsey and his immediate family to fly by private jet to Switzerland in order to lunch with Wenger. 'It was the readiness of Arsenal to make such an effort for the young player that made the difference, as both clubs offered personal terms that were very similar,' reports The Independent.
United's pursuit of the in-demand Welshman was flawed in another telling respect. The premature announcement on their website last week that they had agreed to sign Ramsey was an indication of their over-confidence and mistaken belief that their pledge to loan the player back to the Welsh club would seal the deal. While the arrangement suited Cardiff, Ramsey himself was not keen on staying at Ninian Park for another season. Wenger, on the other hand, was able to reassure the youngster that he would be part of Arsenal's first-team squad in the forthcoming campaign.
Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will become the new Chelsea manager on 1st July.
Scolari, who is currently masterminding Portugal's Euro 2008 challenge, has accepted an offer to replace Avram Grant at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have confirmed that the Brazilian World-Cup winning coach will take charge after the European Championship.
"Chelsea Football Club is delighted to confirm that Luiz Felipe Scolari will be the club's new manager from July 1, 200," read a club statement.
"Felipe has great qualities. He is one of the world's top coaches with a record of success at country and club level, he gets the best out of a talented squad
of players and his ambitions and expectations match ours.
"He was the outstanding choice.
"Out of respect for his current role as Head Coach of the Portuguese national team, and to ensure minimum disruption to this work, there will be no further
comment from Chelsea FC nor from Felipe about his new role until his employment with us commences."
Despite having previously offered a commitment to Fulham Football Club after a barren season, David Healy could be about to move on.
The Evening Standard tonight carries an article implying that the Leeds manager, Gary McAlister, may be trying to tempt him back to the Yorkshire club.
Healy, despite a prolific season for Northern Ireland, only managed four goals in thirty league games for Fulham and Roy Hodgson may be prepared to do business with the Elland Road outfit!
