Maggio's Euro dejection
Sampdoria star Christian Maggio has revealed his disappointment at missing out on Roberto Donadoni’s Euro 2008 squad.
The 26-year-old winger was one of the surprise packages of the season and became a cult figure at Marassi during Samp’s successful campaign.
However, the talented Venetian – who is co-owned by Fiorentina – didn’t make the cut for the trip to Austria and Switzerland.
“I am still disappointed that I wasn’t chosen for Italy,” he told Radio Kiss Kiss.
“Unfortunately I did well at the wrong time. Rationally I didn’t expect to get a call from Donadoni, but I was still gutted when I saw the squad list yesterday.
“But I accept the Coach’s choices and I know that I will have to do better still to win an Azzurri shirt next year.”
Maggio’s future is still to be decided with Napoli reportedly ready to table a £6m bid, but he knows where he wants to be next term.
“I’ll stay at Samp,” he insisted. “I really like being in Genoa in a calm atmosphere and I hope to live there next year.
“I am honoured by interest from big cubs, but my desire is to wear the Blucerchiati jersey.
“I can’t forget the fantastic people that I have got to know and have helped me in my professional development.”
