Distin Blasts England's Big-Four Obsession

Portsmouth defender Sylvain Distin believes a final featuring none of the ‘big four’ is exactly what the FA Cup needed…

Pompey will face Cardiff City this weekend in the first FA Cup final not to feature Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool or Manchester United since 1991.

England’s top four clubs all failed to reach the semi-finals, with Chelsea and Liverpool memorably dispatched by Championship minnows Barnsley in consecutive rounds.

This occurrence comes as a breath of fresh air to Distin, who insists such variety can only be good for the English game.

“I’ve tried to understand the obsession which some people have with the top four but I cannot,” said the Frenchman.

“If those people had their way, we would start the FA Cup from the semi-finals with only the top four involved.

“Or maybe they would stop the competition as soon as those teams are knocked out.

“But that is not what people want to see. The FA Cup is an opportunity for everyone and what has happened this year is good for all of English football.”
