Slovakian ref Michel chosen for UCL final

UEFA have confirmed that Slovakian referee Lubos Michel will take charge of the Champions League final between Manchester United and Chelsea.

Michel, who turned 40 last week, was the referee who awarded a highly-controversial goal to Liverpool against Chelsea in the semi-finals of the competition in 2005.

Then Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho always insisted the shot from Luis Garcia had never crossed the line.

Michel is one of the top referees in the world, however, and is highly experienced having officiated at both Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup, including the tense Germany v Argentina game in the first knock-out round.

He also refereed the 2003 UEFA Cup final where Mourinho's Porto triumphed over Celtic.

Language barriers should not be a problem either as Michel speaks English, Russian, German and Polish as well as his native tongue.

At Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium on Wednesday, Michel will be backed by the assistant referees who have accompanied him at his major tournaments: Roman Slysko (34) and Martin Balko (36).

The fourth official will be Vladimir Hrinak (44), also of Slovakia.

Pitch concerns for final

UEFA have admitted they are "slightly worried" about the appearance of the pitch on which Wednesday night's Champions League final will be played - but they do not believe it will hamper the all-English match.

The grass surface at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium - on which Chelsea will play Manchester United - has come under scrutiny after groundsman Matt Frost revealed it had not had time to bed down following its laying just 15 days ago.

A second pitch was required after the initial one, placed on top of the 'plastic' surface that is normally used at the stadium last October, was deemed unacceptable.

UEFA officials are happy that the pitch will be playable, but spokesman William Gaillard told BBC Sport: "We are slightly worried about the look of it.

"In terms of the quality, we have made some tests in the last few days and it is perfectly fine.

"It may not look very, very green on television, but, essentially, it is a good pitch to play football on. At this stage, we are confident it will be fine."

Frost is relieved that he managed to talk stadium bosses into spending £160,000 on a second grass surface (seen being laid in the photo), adding: "If I hadn't persuaded them, they would have used the old one which would have been a catastrophe."

for me i'll just enjoy the match as we have the league in the pocket already.
also it's not really a good thing for young lads such as ronny rooney and tevez to win all they could when they're still young, they must lose a bit of motivation in the future.
so... enjoy~
