Platini Calls For Salary Cap
UEFA president Michel Platini has taken square aim at stopping footballer's salaries from spiralling out of control amid concerns that the clubs' ever-growing wage packets are threatening the viability of many teams and widening the chasm between the haves and have nots.
Although Uefa is not suggesting a cap on individual players' wages - such a move would contravene EU law - the governing body believes there may be a way of introducing a "squad cap". This would put a ceiling on the total amount paid in wages and perhaps be fixed at a percentage of a club's revenue.
"We know that an individual salary cap would be very difficult to enforce in European law. But we need to talk to the EC about clubs spending only a percentage of income on salaries,"
William Gaillard, UEFA's communications director said on behalf of his boss.
"It could be 55%, 60%, 65% - Karl-Heinz Rummenigge [chairman of the new European Club Association] has talked recently about 50-55%.
"Michel Platini has said this is what the clubs want and we will support it but we will not enforce it unilaterally," Gaillard added.
"Chelsea do not want to be able to beat Man United and Arsenal 7-0 every week as no one would turn up.
"They want strong competition - but European competition law does not allow for that."
