The debacle at Newcastle United shows no sign of coming to an end as Joe Kinnear found an empty training ground on his first official day as interim manager.

The former Wimbledon, Luton Town and Nottingham Forest boss was expected to begin work on reviving the team's fortunes after five consecutive defeats, but arrived on Monday to discover the squad had been given the day off.

It is the latest in a catalogue of stunning developments on Tyneside as the club lurches from one disaster to another.

Kinnear himself experienced it first hand the moment he arrived in Newcastle when no club official met him at the airport meaning he had to pay for a cab to take him to St James' Park.

And then it transpired that the 61-year-old has a two-match touchline ban from his time at Forest four years ago for calling a referee 'Coco the Clown' which means he will not be able to take his place on the bench until October 20 - with his contract expiring on October 31.

Newcastle United's interim manager Joe Kinnear has launched an astonishing expletive-laden attack on his critics over the press coverage of his arrival on Tyneside.

Kinnear, the surprise choice to fill the void left by Kevin Keegan's departure, swore more than 50 times during his first official press conference as manager of the Magpies and bombarded a number of journalists with a verbal tirade.

The 61-year-old, who was last involved in football management at Nottingham Forest four years ago, claimed the media had already attempted to undermine his influence at Newcastle and that his first press conference would also be the last for many of the journalists there.

The former Wimbledon and Luton Town boss came out fighting with an onslaught against those who he believed have ridiculed him, insisting they would not be welcome at further meetings and that in future he would only talk to two local papers that he would hand pick.

Although his press conference was littered with four-letter words Kinnear insisted that the pressure of the job had not got to him and that he was simply defending himself.

Edited, Kinnear said: "I will stand up and fight for myself in any corner. You're not going to frighten me in any manner.

"Whatever you do, or whatever headlines you run, you're not going to embarrass me.

"I'm not going to stand for it. I've come up here for a simple chance to prove myself. Get off my back and let me get on with my job. That's all I ask.''

Van der Sar returns for injury hit Holland

Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Saar has made a surprise return to the Holland squad.

The 37-year-old called time on his international career after Euro 2008 having earned 128 caps, but left the door open for a possible return, saying he would play if coach Bert van Marwijk needed him.

Now with Ajax keeper Maarten Stekelenburg injured, Van Marwijk has selected Van der Sar for both upcoming World Cup qualifiers, against Iceland on October 11 and Norway on October 15.

"This is great," Van Marwijk said as he revealed his squad in Zeist. "Edwin is someone from the another level, he is above all others. He will start both games.

"We deliberated with the technical staff on Wednesday and came to the conclusion we had to call Edwin.

"After that, Frank de Boer and I contacted Edwin and in the evening he called us back with the good news.

"It gave him something of a shock, yes. But he felt mostly flattered. He took some time to think about it and I am happy with his decision."

FC Utrecht keeper Michel Vorm has been named in the squad for the first time.

The 24-year-old has been named as reserve keeper Henk Timmer is carrying an injury.

Also back in the squad is Real Madrid's Wesley Sneijder, who makes his return after being kept out for two months with a knee injury despite not having played for his club side this season. Goalkeepers: Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United), Henk Timmer (Feyenoord), Michel Vorm (Utrecht)

Defenders: Tim de Cler (Feyenoord), John Heitinga (Atletico Madrid), Joris Mathijsen (SV Hamburg), Andre Ooijer (Blackburn Rovers), Dirk Marcelis (PSV Eindhoven)

Midfielders: Ibrahim Afellay (PSV Eindhoven), Mark van Bommel (Bayern Munich), Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Feyenoord), Orlando Engelaar (Schalke 04), Nigel de Jong (SV Hamburg), Rafael van der Vaart (Real Madrid), Demy de Zeeuw (AZ Alkmaar), Wesley Sneijder (Real Madrid)
