Profits from iShoot iPhone game cause developer to quit job

Software developers have been releasing applications on the App Store for a while now, but there's still a good bit of tinkering and learning going on when it comes to things like application pricing. The latest educational tale is that of Ethan Nicholas, developer of a game called iShoot. According to the iPhone Savior story, iShoot was languishing until Nicholas launched a "demo" version, iShoot Lite, which apparently caused the paid version iShoot to jump to the top of the paid application charts.
iShoot is just the latest in a series of applications that have caused developers to strike it rich thanks to the App Store. Supposedly, at least 10,000 downloads per day are required to reach the top spot of the Top Paid Apps section, and iShoot has been there for several days now. 10,000 downloads of iShoot per day translates into $21,000 of revenue (after Apple's cut), so even a few days at the top of the list can earn a developer over $100,000. In the case of iShoot, the only additional marketing was the Lite version, so the return on Nicholas' time has been high.
In fact, sales of iShoot have been so good that Nicholas recently gave his employer, Sun Microsystems, his two-weeks notice ; he apparently plans to make iPhone software development his new day job. Nicholas originally developed iShoot in his spare time without having any Objective-C experience, so more features and applications will be coming now that he has the time to devote to programming. As with many other App Store success stories, iShoot is an example of how even folks who are new to the platform can not only support themselves, but make money too. His story will likely spur quite a few new demo versions, and maybe even a few new developers.
