La Liga Team Of The Week: Round Nine
In a week of shocks and surprises in the Spanish top flight there were plenty of contenders for the team of week but unfortunately there can only be eleven...
With 35 goals scored over the weekend in La Primera there were plenty of attacking options to choose from, whereas in defence there were only three teams who managed to keep a clean sheet. For that very reason we've gone for an adventurous 3-4-3 formation this week...
GOALKEEPER
Daniel Aranzubia (Deportivo La Coruña)
The Spanish shot-stopper was in brilliant form against Real Betis and his multitude of saves in the first-half kept the game alive for his side to clinch their first away win of the season.
DEFENDERS
Ángel López (Villarreal)
The right-back has been one of the most reliable performers in the Villarreal defence this season and proved himself again in the tricky surroundings of San Mamés with a solid performance both going forward and at the back.
Nicolas Pareja (Espanyol)
The players might not have said it but they were in desperate need of a win on Sunday and they got it thanks to some brilliant attacking play and solid defending. Osasuna might not be the most clinical side in front of goal but Pareja performed well to shut down their limited threats and especially in the final minutes when balls were been thrown forward constantly he was a rock.
Carles Puyol (Barcelona)
The horrible conditions at La Rosaleda were simply meant for a tough player like Puyol and the defender did not disappoint as, even playing out of position at left-back, he marshalled his defence well all evening and saw off most of the Málaga threats well.
MIDFIELDERS
Ángel Lafita (Deportivo La Coruña)
After Riki had given Deportivo the lead against Betis the second goal was the crucial one and it was a memorable one too from Lafita. The midfielder carried it from the half-way line into the box, jinked brilliantly around a defender and then blasted past Espinosa Casto in the goal to effectively win the game for his side with just ten minutes left. Not only that but he scored another, albeit much simpler, goal as the clock wore down to give Depor a three goal lead and to take his season tally to four.
Xavi (Barcelona)
The Spaniard has been overshadowed at times by Andrés Iniesta this season but there is no doubt that he was the main man on Saturday as he bagged a brace against Málaga. Scored the all-important first goal with a lovely free-kick and then netted the third goal which gave Barcelona a two goal cushion.
Santi Cazorla (Villarreal)
Led by example against Athletic Bilbao with some slick passing and driving runs, one which culminated in a brilliant solo goal that he smashed home from the edge of the box. Could have had more but for some good saves from Gorka Iraizoz nevertheless it was a fine performance from the Spanish international.
Fabian Canobbio (Valladolid)
Canobbio was possibly the most inspired substitution of the weekend as he came on after half-time with his team 2-1 down and scored twice to complete an amazing comeback for the home side. His first was a poachers finish into an empty net but his second was a sublime free-kick which went in off the bar and he totally changed the game for Valladolid.
STRIKERS
Mate Bilic (Sporting Gijón)
The Croatian striker burst onto the scene against Sevilla earlier this season and reminded everyone he was still around this weekend with a brilliant performance, capped off with two goals. In an eventful game he hit the angle with one free-kick, narrowly missed with another, tested Juan Pablo Colinas with some powerful shots, scored with a close-range header and converted his own penalty after it was saved initially, not bad for ninety minutes.
Mohammed Tchité (Racing Santander)
Few could have predicted that Racing Santander, who haven't been able to score for money or love this season, would beat in-form Valencia this weekend, but that is exactly what they did thanks to a hat-trick from Mohammed Tchité. The powerful striker gave his side the lead on three occasions and looked a constant threat as he sparked his side into life and up out of the bottom rungs of the table.
Sergio Agüero (Atlético Madrid)
Apparently one player doesn't make a team but you wouldn't believe it watching Atlético Madrid with and without Sergio Agüero. Like any great player when he is in the side the Argentine wins matches and he did just that on Saturday, chipping Miguel Moya for a brilliant opening goal before tapping home the second and final goal from close range.
SUBS BENCH
Those who were close but just didn't quite make it this week are:
Carlos Kameni (Espanyol)
Filipe (Deportivo La Coruña)
Albert Crusat (Almería)
Estaban Granero (Getafe)
Giuseppe Rossi (Villarreal) |
