Liverpool hit by Torres setback  

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres looks set for an increased injury lay-off because of a damaged hamstring.

Torres, 24, had been expected to be out of action for two weeks but has now been told by specialists that he will be out for at least four weeks.

The Spaniard suffered the injury during the Champions League victory against Marseille at Anfield on 26 November.

"We first said two to three weeks but do not want to put a time on it now," said Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez.

"He will come back when he is ready. We will not rush him back.

"We want to resolve this problem once and for all and we will make sure we do that."

Torres has been plagued by hamstring problems over the past 18 months, suffering the injury five times in that period.

Liverpool are currently analysing his training schedule with both club and country in an attempt to resolve the problem.

Benitez had questioned the Spain training regime and believes it could be the cause of his injury.

"He has been injured now three times while with the national team and it is something we have to analyse," he stated.

"We knew they were doing something that is maybe not the best for the player."

It had been hoped he would return by mid December but Torres will now miss Premier League games against Blackburn, Hull, Arsenal and Bolton and Tuesday's Champions League tie against PSV Eindhoven.

He could return for the trip to Newcastle on 28 December.

Liverpool have struggled in recent weeks in the absence of last season's top scorer, with new signing Robbie Keane still finding his form since his £20m move from Tottenham in the summer.

The Reds currently top the Premier League but have drawn their last two home games without scoring a goal.

Torres himself is committed to returning to the side to boost their title credentials.

He said: "The only thing to do is to get on with the rehabilitation and make sure that I come back when I am ready and not too soon."

Drogba stays at Chelsea - Kenyon

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba will not leave Stamford Bridge in January, says club chief executive Peter Kenyon.

Drogba, 30, reportedly met Inter Milan representatives recently, sparking rumours he could join former Blues boss Jose Mourinho at the Italian club.

Kenyon told BBC Sport it was "not relevant" whether the rumours of a meeting were true.

But he added: "Didier's under contract for the next 18 months. He will be going nowhere in January."

Drogba, who has yet to score in the Premier League this season, has been persistently linked with a move from Chelsea since Mourinho's departure last year.

The Ivory Coast striker missed the start of the season with a knee injury and is now serving a three-match ban for throwing a coin back into the crowd during the Carling Cup defeat at Burnley.

Reports of a meeting with Inter sporting director Marco Branca and Mourinho's agent Jorge Mendes emerged in the lead-up to Chelsea's Champions League game in Bordeaux last week.

They prompted an angry response from manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, who said he did not know if they were true, adding: "I do not sleep with Drogba."

Meanwhile, Drogba would only reiterate that he has a Chelsea contract until 2010, a fact Kenyon was also keen to stress.

"Whether people leave Chelsea is as much down to us as anybody else," he said.

"I don't know whether he did or he didn't (meet Inter representatives).

"But he's a big player for us and we want him back. He's one of those players who can make a difference."

Kenyon added that Chelsea were highly unlikely to carry out any business in the January transfer window.

"We never do because the types of players that we're looking for are normally unavailable in January," he said.

"They're either cup-tied or just not available."

Roy Keane has left his position as manager of Sunderland, BBC Sport understands.

Sunderland have yet to confirm the exit of Keane, although players and staff were informed of the decision on Thursday morning.

Gallas out but Toure back for Wigan clash

Arsène Wenger had good news and bad news when he discussed his injury list with Arsenal TV Online on Thursday afternoon.

The Arsenal manager will be without William Gallas on Saturday after the French defender failed to shake off the calf injury he suffered during Sunday's win at Chelsea. However, Kolo Toure's own calf problem has eased and he is available to face Wigan.

Johan Djourou (hip) is also fit, giving Wenger plenty of options at the back, while Emmanuel Eboue could also return after five weeks out with a knee injury.

"We certainly lose Gallas for Saturday but we have of course Mikael Silvestre, who will be available," said Wenger. "We have Kolo Toure available again and he is more suited to playing on the right side [of central defence]. We will see until Saturday how well he is.

"Eboue could be back in the group and Diaby [abdominal strain] could be available from next week onwards. Djourou is fine."

Theo Walcott (shoulder) and Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) are still sidelined but Eduardo's return seems imminent. "As soon as possible he will play now," confirmed Wenger. "He is joining in full training matches but he needs games now."
