HKG 1-3 BHN: Second-half show disappoints Macala
Bahrain (in white) led Hong Kong 2-0 at the break and became complacent in the second-half according to head coach Milan Macala. (AFP)
HONG KONG – Bahrain coach Milan Macala criticised his side’s second-half performance despite notching up a 3-1 win over Hong Kong in their opening 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualifier on Wednesday.
First-half goals from Ismaeel Abdullatef and Abdulla Baba put the Gulf side in command of the fixture before Salman Isa added a third in the dying minutes of the game.
Substitute Cheng Siu Wai claimed a consolation for the hosts in stoppage-time but it was the sluggish manner in which his side performed in the second-half that left Macala far from happy.
“The first game is over and we have three very important points,” said Macala.
“I’m satisfied with the first-half, we played some good football, had good movement and we scored two goals
“But in the second-half we looked like we were celebrating and Hong Kong were strong and aggressive.
“In the second-half the players came out like the game was over and allowed the Hong Kong team to think they had a chance. It was 2-0 and if at that moment Hong Kong had scored, the situation would not have been good.
“But sometimes in football you play well and don’t get a good result and sometimes you don’t play well but still get a good result.”
Hong Kong coach Dejan Antovic refused to be downhearted by the result and batted away suggestions his defence was to blame for Bahrain’s first two goals.
“The boys did very well in what was a very difficult game for us,” he said.
“Again we showed we have discipline and fighting spirit.
“It was good experience for us and what is important for this Hong Kong team is that we need more tough games like this so we can prepare better and get better as a team.
“I’m not disappointed with my defence. We’ve only been working together for two months and we’ve only had about 20 training sessions. Maybe after we have been together for one year we can be better.”
