Guangzhou side offering big money for Tai Po star Bertoti Padilha
Brazilian defender Joel Bertoti Padilha is set to swap Tai Po for a lucrative move to China Super League side Guangzhou Pharmaceutical.
The 28-year-old, who has played in Hong Kong for three years, could leave the New Territories as early as this week if the two clubs can hammer out a deal.
Tai Po secretary Chan Ping confirmed Bertoti Padilha (pictured) had been targeted by the mainland outfit, and admitted there was little the club could do to keep him, even though they are reaching the business end of the season.
"We all know the Brazilian is a good player and we need his services for the rest of the season, which includes two cup competitions," said Chan. "But the offer from the Guangzhou team is too good for him to refuse. Tai Po are only a district club and we don't have the money to keep the player.
The Chinese team will offer Bertoti Padilha US$10,000 per month - more than double his salary - to make the move across the border. The Super League kicks off next month and Guangzhou Pharmaceutical, who finished seventh out of 16 last season, are aiming for another top-eight finish this season.
The sticking point remains the transfer fee. While the Super League team are willing to pay big bucks to the player, compensating Tai Po is another matter.
"No one is indispensable in the squad and also we don't want to stop the player from earning a better living," said Chan. "A solution will be worked out soon."
The 1.82 metre defender has been instrumental in Tai Po's success in domestic competition since they were promoted to the top flight three seasons ago. Bertoti Padilha has been a rock at the back and a threat from set pieces - notching six goals this season. |
