Asian Debate: Who's The Best Asian 2018 Candidate? Asian editor John Duerden looks at the five World Cup candidates from the Asian Football Confederation.
The hats for 2018 and 2022 are in the ring. Tossing in the headgear is the easy part for various candidates around the world.
The hard work starts now. Bids must be formulated and presented, funds must be gathered and people must be persuaded.
Goal.com Asia runs a rapid rule over the hopeful quintet.
The candidates (in alphabetical order)
Australia
Pros – Ofall the candidates, Australia have been talking about 2018 the longestand the will is there. The nation loves sport, has big-money backingfrom billionaire Frank Lowy and has experience of staging bigtournaments.
Cons – Will need some purpose-built football stadiums and there is always the problem of the distance and time difference.
Indonesia (just 2022)
Pros– 235 million football-lovers would give the competition a backdrop ofimmense passion and colour. The 2007 Asian Cup was a success and takingthe competition to the football-crazy region of south-east would be abig deal.
Cons – It is a long shot. A good deal ofinvestment will be needed in infrastructure and facilities. There isalso the problem of corruption that is perceived to be rife.
Japan
Pros – Japan has done it before and most of the infrastructure is in place with excellent stadia and transport links.
Cons –Biggest hurdle is the fact that it co-hosted in 2002 and a bid islinked to the 2016 Olympic bid from Tokyo, one that is by no meanscertain to be successful.
Qatar
Pros – FirstArabian host will automatically win some support and is also gettingready to host the 2011 Asian Cup. Qatar also has influence in the worldof football politics with AFC head Mohammed Bin Hamman close to SeppBlatter. Money will also be no object.
Cons – June in Qatar is blisteringly hot and due to the country’s size, there would be a limited number of host cities.
South Korea
Pros – Impressed as host in 2002 and has the infrastructure and facilties already in place. Koreans campaign better than most...
Cons – Hosted just seven years ago. |
