Guillaume Hoarau To Take Injured Nicolas Anelka's Place In France Squad
Initially Guillaume Hoarau was overlooked for the French party to face Lithuania in a key World Cup double-header, but an injury to the Chelsea striker has opened the door for the Paris Saint-Germain forward.
Controversially ignored by France head coach Raymond Domenech for les Bleus’ World Cup qualifying matches against Lithuania, Guillaume Hoarau has bustled his way into the squad as Chelsea’s Nicolas Anelka has dropped out due to injury.
L’Equipe reports that Anelka has sustained an injury to his big toe that will see him sidelined for approximately three weeks and, as a response, Domenech has called upon Ligue 1’s second top scorer to step into the international fold for the first time.
Toulouse forward Andre-Pierre Gignac was called into the initial 23-man squad in preference to Hoarau and justified his selection at the weekend. Gignac and Hoarau went head-to-head at the weekend as their side’s clashed in a key Ligue 1 match-up; a fixture that le Tefece won 4-1, with Gignac finding the target – his 18th strike in the Le Championnat this season.
Domenech’s initial justification for picking the former Lorient man ahead of 25-year-old Hoarau lay in his greater ability to work the channels. There can be little doubting that the PSG man will provide a very different threat to Gignac, however, his presence in the squad and ability to hold the ball up or flick it on for a team-mate, could prove useful when les Bleus face the Lithuanians.
The first fixture between the sides takes place on Saturday in Kaunas before meeting again on April 1 in Paris.
