"Shearer to make shock return to Newcastle"

Reports suggest that Alan Shearer is set to make a shock return to St James' Park and take the managerial reins at Newcastle United. The appointment, in the absence of Joe Kinnear, currently recovering from heart surgery, is said to be until the end of the 2008-9 season.

Local hero Shearer, who played for the Magpies from 1996 from 2006, has previously resisted a number of overtures to get back into football, repeatedly asserting his commitment to media work with the BBC. Yet, in the hour of his beloved club's desperate need, it seems as if the former England captain has decided to try and be the man to save the club from dire relegation trouble.
Currently 18th and in the Premier League relegation zone, Newcastle have been without a manager since February 7 when Kinnear, himself appointed as interim boss after the highly controversial exit of Kevin Keegan in the opening weeks of the season, took his leave of absence.
With the club highly possible to lurch out of the Premier League for the first time since 1993, owner Mike Ashley, previously the least popular man on Tyneside after his row his Keegan, has seemingly been able to attract the only man as popular in the city as "King Kev".
Shearer, who has little formal coaching experience and does not possess the UEFA Pro Licence usually required to manage a Premier League club, is believed to have previously turned down a number of attempts to lure him back into the Newcastle fold, faces a hugely difficult assignment in his first management job.
Stepping into the shoes of Chris Hughton, who has been caretaker boss on two occasions this season, with little success to his name, Shearer faces the challenge of Chelsea on Saturday, the first of eight tumultuous matches for Newcastle that could either their future and cement the former club captain's status as a true Tyneside hero. |
