Arsenal's Arsene Wenger blasts Manchester United dominance of PFA awards
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has criticised the PFA award nominations which are dominated by bitter rivals Manchester United.
Sir Alex Ferguson's men occupy five of the six Player of the Year nominations - Liverpool's Steven Gerrard being the other.
Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo, Edwin ven der Sar and Nemanja Vidic are all up for the award, while Arsenal have no nominations.
An angry Wenger said: "The decisons are all made in February. The players who are rewarded are those who played well until February.
"A player who has been out until January has no chance to be voted but he can still be very influential for the rest of the season."
Arsenal's lack of nominations reflects their poor start to the season, but they are currently on an 18-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.
Wenger added: "Now is the most important time of the season - April, May - so these awards just reward the players for the first six months of the season.
"If they vote in May, I hope some of my players would be in there."
Ferguson, though, believes it is just a case of sour grapes from the Frenchman, and said: "Arsene can't just talk about the last two or three games.
"Maybe, in fairness, they should vote later. But we have had some outstanding performers this season."
Wenger put his team's nervous start to the campaign down to inexperience but has been blown away by how they have responded, with the Gunners pressing for a place in the semi-finals of the Champions League and occupying fourth spot in the Premier League.
Wenger said: "This team is ahead of schedule. No one could have predicted we'd be where we are now after we lost five of our first 14 games.
"You can have children who are talented very early in their lives but you never know how they will respond to the difficult challenges."
