1. What is ideology? Use Hong Kong as a case study, explain what ideology/ideologies the government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) is/are holding in relations to economic policies, democratic development and attitudes towards public opinion? Give evidence to support your answer. (the case can be selected by the will of the student)
2. Define political neutrality. Do you think civil servants can and should make politically neutral decision in the policy making process? Choose a policy of the HKSAR government, and study whether civil servants posed politically neutral stance in making decision.
3. What is separation of power? Use a case of authoritative and democratic state and compare the extent to which separation of power is achieved.
4. Select and study a state which is using a unicameral and another using a bicameral system. Compare their composition, how the members are selected and the political influences to the executive branch.
5. What are the differences of political parties and interest groups? Identify one political party and one interest group of a state. Compare both in terms of their objectives, structure, channels of interest articulation and aggregation, and political influence in that particular political context.
6. What are the differences on the characteristics of political culture in Hong Kong and Taiwan? What factors can account for their differences?
7. Select two cases where different electoral systems are applied. Compare the rationales of using the respective system, and the political consequences thus provoked.
8. What are the differences between democracy and democratization? What are the factors favouring and hindering the democratization? Do you think economic development should be the pre-requisite of democratization? Use some examples to illustrate your answer.
