I can understand why Manchester City are desperate to buy John Terry.

Terry brings heart and unswerving commitment. It doesn't matter how much he's being paid. That never changes.

That's what City need more than anything.

They need character. They need a man like JT to help Mark Hughes spread a sense of mission around the team.

They don't want any more prima donnas like Robinho who give the impression they think they're doing the club a favour just by being there.

Boro agree to sell Downing to Villa for ￡12m
July 15, 2009

Aston Villa have made their first significant move of the transfer window
with a ￡12m move for Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing.

The Teessiders have accepted Villa's bid for the England international whose
participation in the 2009-10 season may be delayed by a foot injury
sustained towards the end of Boro's unsuccessful fight against relegation.
Downing's return to playing may rule him out beyond October.

That move may heighten speculation that Villa may be prepared to sell prize
asset Ashley Young, last season's PFA Young Player of the Year. Manager
Martin O'Neill has moved to strengthen a squad which has suffered the loss
of the retired Martin Laursen and midfielder Gareth Barry, who departed for
Manchester City in a ￡12m deal at the end of May.

Young has been variously linked with a move to Tottenham, Chelsea and even
Real Madrid while Downing had been promised by Boro chairman Steve Gibson
that he could leave if a big club came in at the right price.
