Smith Takes Top Merit Marks Prize

NEWCASTLE United midfield ace Alan Smith has finished the season as nufc.co.uk's Merit Marks top scorer with a total of 84 points.
The 29-year-old skippered The Magpies on more occasions than any other player during the title-winning campaign, the Yorkshireman proving to be an influential character both on and off the pitch.
And recognition of Smith's contribution was evident on a game-by-game basis as he consistently scored highly in man-of-the-match polls voted for by nufc.co.uk readers.
An ankle injury towards the end of the campaign allowed the likes of Jonas Gutierrez and Andy Carroll to make ground on the early-season runaway leader, but a solid display on the final day at QPR saw Smith pip Gutierrez to the prize by just one point.

Below is an explanation of how points were scored, and a full rundown of the final standings ...
Following each game of the 2009/10 season we asked our readers to vote for their star player via the Quick Vote which is found to the right-hand side of all stories which appear on our official website.
After a few days we tallied up the votes with the top performer being awarded five points, second-placed player four points and so on until we reached the fifth most popular choice who won one point.
