英軍前鋒將宣告掛靴

【商台互動體育組】英超球會韋斯咸，突然傳出驚人消息，曾入選英格蘭國家隊的26歲前鋒艾殊頓，將宣告退出球壇。

「槌仔幫」韋斯咸官方發言人表示：「我們確認他不在球隊的陣容中，但暫時沒有更多消息透露。」英國《每日鏡報》稱，今年26歲的9號仔艾殊頓，以 700萬鎊轉會費加盟韋斯咸，曾經入選英格蘭大軍，但因傷關係將會提前結束球員生涯；在英甲球會克魯開始職業生涯的艾殊頓，效力178場轟入74球，其後轉投諾域治。

3周之前，重傷近一年艾殊利飛赴荷蘭阿姆斯特丹接受治療，著名外科醫生雲迪克詳細檢查後，發表了悲觀的報告：「如果繼續踢波，餘生可能要在輪椅上度過。」

06年英總盃，艾殊頓曾協助韋斯咸殺入決賽，惜未能封王。同年8月，該名前鋒入選國家隊，在操練上與胡禮菲臘斯發生嚴重碰撞，足踝骨裂，導致06/07球季完全報銷；07/08賽季復出，被譽為「新舒利亞」的艾殊頓，共在31場聯賽轟入10球。

The 26 year-old West Ham and England striker is suffering from a degenerative ankle problem. He travelled to Amsterdam three weeks ago for an assessment from leading Dutch surgeon Niek van Dijk and was warned he could end up wheelchair-bound if he carried on playing.

A Hammers spokesman said last night: “We can confirm Dean Ashton is unavailable for selection but we cannot comment any further."

Ashton, who has endured ankle problems since sustaining a fracture during an England training session in August 2006, has not been able to train or play since breaking down in manager Gianfranco Zola's first training session on September 15 last year.

In June 2007 Ashton said: "At your low ppoints you think you're never going to play again and that is a horrible feeling. Anyone who tells you they don't feel like that would be lying."

Van Dijk informed Ashton that he could perform high-risk surgery to alleviate the pain but that the striker had to accept his playing career was over.

West Ham are now in the process of lodging an insurance claim while negotiating a pay-off for Ashton.

Zola eases Ashton fears
Hammers boss says striker is 'still doing his rehabilitation'

West Ham United boss Gianfranco Zola has played down reports suggesting Dean Ashton could be set to announce his retirement from football.

A report on Sunday claimed the striker was ready to call an end to his career after severely struggling for fitness in recent years.

Ashton, who was linked with a move to Stoke earlier this summer, has not played for the Hammers since September 2008.

Speaking after his side's 2-1 loss to Tottenham, Zola said: "As far as I know, he's still doing his rehabilitation and I'm hoping to have him in my team. He's a player who can make a big difference.

"Until they tell me something different, I'm hoping he'll come back."

Ashton signed for the Hammers from Norwich in 2006 for £7.25million and has made 46 league appearances since the move, scoring 15 goals.
