MANAMA - Bahrain coach Milan Macala declared it was mission accomplished after seeing Ismaeel Abdulatif fire a nine-minute hat-trick in a 4-0 demolition of Hong Kong that qualified the Gulf nation for the 2011 Asian Cup in Qatar.
Abdulatif opened his account after 34 minutes and never looked back as the hosts established a comfortable half-time advantage in the Group A qualifying clash at Bahrain National Stadium.
Abdullah Al Dakeel then added a fourth with 11 minutes remaining as the hosts made up for the disappointment of missing out on a place at the World Cup last year.
"We achieved what we were aiming for today and we sealed our place in the Asian Cup finals," said Macala (pictured).
"After finishing the first-half with a 3-0 lead, we could only score one more goal and we talked to the players about that.
"The performance in the second-half dropped mainly after we took a big lead in the first-half. The players also lost their concentration and that that's why we failed to add more than one goal in the second period."
Having booked their ticket to Qatar, Macala also revealed he will now give more fringe players a chance to shine in their remaining Group A games.
"After sealing our qualification with two matches to spare, I will give the chance for young and local players in the remaining two matches against Yemen and Japan,"he added.
Assistant coach Liu Chun Fai conceded Hong Kong were outplayed by a far superior opponent.
"We obviously don't have the necessary experience to play against strong teams," he said.
"I asked the players to play with a defensive formation and we managed to keep Bahrain at bay in the first 30 minutes."
"However, the players went forward and they left a lot of spaces behind which were exploited by the Bahraini players and they managed to score three goals by the end of the first-half.
"Bahrain were good on the counter attacks and this was clear in the game as they scored three quick goals which came after taking advantage of space in our area.
"I have asked the players in the second-half to concentrate and close the space and we successfully played a good defensive game. However, Bahrain scored a fourth goal which was more like the other three goals in the first-half. |
